Great Falls Hike! (Maryland Side)

First off, it's suppose to be 60 degrees on Saturday.

Soooo, has the winter weather and the short days got you down in the dumps? Did all that holiday food weigh you down and you're looking to burn a few calories? Want to get a jump start on that New Years resolution before you give it up for good? If the answer is yes, then come join us for a warm winter weather hike at Great Falls!

The plan, depending on water level, will be to go off the beaten path and try some rock scrambling. I checked it out last week, and the water level was still a bit too high to get access to the huge section of rocks. But, I figure if the water level is still high, we'll do some of the rock scrambling section and then switch over to the Billy Goat Trail "A".

We'll meet up at the concession stand right next to the parking lot. Entry is $5 to the park. If you plan on attending these hikes in the future, I highly recommend purchasing the $20 annual pass.

Please, wear comfortable shoes. Also, be comfortable with climbing on rocks. It's not serious rock climbing, but it does require scampering up and down rocks and 60/70 degree angles.

MEETUP INFORMATION

TRANSPORT: You'll need a car to get to the hike. I can offer rides for 3 people, but you'll have to meet me at my house (which is an 8 minute walk from the Medical Center Metro on the Red Line). If anybody else can offer rides, please post so in the comments.

COST: $5 entry fee per car to get into the park.

TIME: We will begin the hike EXACTLY at 1:45 pm. If you aren't there by that time, you'll have to catch up to us (just shoot me a text and I'll tell you where we are on the trail).

CONTACT INFO: My cellphone is (301) 758-1144. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.

REMINDER THIS IS ON THE MARYLAND SIDE. IF YOU SHOW UP ON THE VIRGINIA SIDE, YOU ONLY HAVE 20 FEET OF WATER SEPARATING YOU FROM US. I HOPE YOU'RE A GOOD SWIMMER.

If you are running late, we are doing the overlook first. Meet us there, we will be at it for 10 minutes.

I and a few others from the group are at an overlook across from the bathroom and museum.

Go to the overlook further down the path

We will be leaving for the trail momentarily. If you are running late, you can jog and catch up to us. A group this size will be moving slowly.

    January 12, 2013

    • Bladen

Yes. We will wait a second more. If we aren't at the concession stand, we are stopping briefly at the bathroom and will walk to the trail head. Jog to catch us.

I am at the Shady Grove metro. If you haven't gotten intouch with me about a ride, you need to do so quickly.

The weather is beautiful, so expect a possible line to get into the park. Factor in an additional five minutes, especially if you think you might be running late.

I'll be heading out from Tysons area. I'd be glad to pick anyone up (3 spots) at W Falls Church/Dunn Loring or Tysons Mall.

I don't know what "rock scrambling" is. Can I still come and just skip that part?

The billy goat trail IS pretty long though, just a heads up. I usually do it in about 3 hours or so.

Thanks for posting that! It's my first time there so I was curious as to how long of a hike it might be

This is awesome! Can't wait :) Billy Goat is my favorite trail at Great Falls and it will be such a beautiful day.

Does someone want to be crazy awesome and help me get a ride?
I live by the National Cathedral, so I can stop by anywhere Metro and Bus accessible.

If you still need a ride, I have two spots left in my car. Shoot me a PM or text me for my address/time etc.

What shoes folks recommend here? I own running shoes. will that work?

    1 · January 8, 2013

    • Richard

I'll second that question. I've hiked before in Vibrams (at Sugarloaf) but haven't been here to Great Falls before.

Sneakers or boots. Depending on the brand of running shoe, they might be too thin for the rocks. I tried wearing my Vans this past weekend and I felt every single pebble under foot.
