My goals for the group are to help you create portraits where the subject(s) look terrific with great lighting and posing. I will concentrate on those two areas. The kind of camera you have will not matter. I believe you can create a great portrait with the best camera around or a cell phone.

You should  know how to work your camera. There are many other factors such as backgrounds, clothing and the message you want to convey that go into creating a portrait. Those will all be addressed as needed or in a separate class. The classes are for people who want to improve their people portraits. Anyone can pick up a camera these days and take a photo but to take a portrait to the next level requires more thought, understanding and a lot of practice.

I'd like to see how the group evolves, but for now we'll get together on location, near Silver Spring, Bethesda and NW and learn about natural portrait posing and lighting. Sometimes we will go for an urban look and other times we might go to a park. We will look for lighting situations that mimic studio lighting without lighting equipment (except maybe a reflector). We will pose each other as singles, couples and groups and occasionally we'll have a model. Next fall I may teach studio portraits. Most of the time we'll meet on Saturday morning and be done before noon.

I look forward to sharing with you. Barbara Glaeser
