Dr. Abed is the founder and director of Al-Rowwad, a cultural center located in Aida Refugee Camp in Bethlehem, Palestine. Our goal is to teach an image other than violence, he says. The arts, which include music, dance, theater and sports, are tools for empowerment with the ability to bring about personal and social change.
While violence and talk of gun control solutions receive high attention, school cultural programs suffer drastic cuts: ironically it is at this time when the arts are most needed.
