• Meet for SPEED
Join up for an opportunity to work together on optimizing our sites. You can benefit even if you can't edit your site right now - we will be happy to share the knowledge. We'll all learn how to see what's slow and how to make it fast! Here is what you can learn: * Identify optimization opportunities using WebpageTest. * Become a master in reading the network waterfall. * Understand the most of the performance flame chart. * Learn the latest trends in measuring site speed. Our host, Priceline, provides food and drinks so we don't go hungry.

  • Capturing Speed of User Experience Using UserTiming API
Sergey Chernyshev will talk about the challenges of capturing accurate metrics around speed of user experience and how instrumenting your application using UserTiming API can help. He will give a brief overview of automated metrics that are captured by the browser and show how custom metrics, specific to features of your user interface can help your teams better relate to these numbers and help more directly align them with user interface optimizations. Sergey will show how to use native UserTiming API to mark specific events and measure differences between these marks on Performance Timeline. He will also introduce UX-Capture JavaScript library to help simplify and unify this instrumentation across your site. We will also look at debugging process using Chrome Developer Tools and how metrics captured with UserTiming API can be automatically picked up by open WebPageTest tool and other synthetic and RUM monitoring tools. We’ll also touch on how UX Capture library can be used to calibrate RUM accuracy using synthetic video analysis. Sergey Chernyshev (@sergeyche) is web a performance enthusiast, open source hacker and web addict. He works as a principal engineer at Meetup and organizes New York Web Performance Meetup Group, local community of web performance geeks in New York and helps kick-start local groups about Web Performance around the world. Sergey teaches a live on-line course about performance with O'Reilly and often speaks on performance-related topics at various local New York events and global conferences, including Velocity and QCon. Meetup is hosting us again. And they still have food and beer! As always, we are going to have geekaways with geeky prizes provided by our sponsors. Agenda: 6:30 - Arrive at Meetup, meet other members 6:45 - Event starts 7:00 - Capturing speed of User Experience using UserTiming API (Sergey Chernyshev) 8:00 - Q&A 8:15 - "Books and Stuff" geekaways 8:30 - Open Discussion, Networking Location: Meetup 632 Broadway 9th floor New York, NY Directions on Google Maps: https://goo.gl/VUw23K Entrance on StreetView: https://goo.gl/h4Cwh6 Our Sponsors: - Fastly (https://www.fastly.com/) is the only CDN that gives businesses complete control over how they serve content and the ability to cache frequently changing content at the edge. - Catchpoint's (https://www.catchpoint.com/) end-user experience monitoring provides complete visibility into users’ experiences from anywhere to detect and fix issues faster.

  • JAMstack & Performance
Session 1: Performance and Authentication Gerald Onyango (https://twitter.com/futuregerald) will discuss authentication, and how it affects performance. He'll compare using session cookies vs JWT (JSON Web Tokens) tokens, and the benefits of JWT which can be used to authenticate requests and pass data on the frontend, on the CDN edge, in functions, and on third party servers, without having to make round trips back to your database for each request. Gerald spent many years doing IT, moved in to support engineering. Now, he does development and support at Netlify. Session 2: Even Better Performance for your Website using JAMstack tools and Techniques Bud Parr (https://twitter.com/budparr) will show examples of tools and strategies to wring out every bit of performance from your website and get great Lighthouse scores (and what Lighthouse is). He will review getting the most out of static site generators and CDNs, techniques for loading assets and more. Bud is a Web Developer and Designer in New York City. He runs The New Dynamic, devoted to JAMstack tools and techniques and is organizer of the upcoming JAMstack NYC conference in the Spring of 2019. This is a joint session with JAMstack NYC, check out their page as well: https://www.meetup.com/JAMstack-nyc/ Meetup is hosting us again. And they still have food and beer! • Real User Measurement Insights
Many websites use real user measurement data to analyze their performance, as well as to validate that optimizations are having the desired effect on end user experience and business metrics. Akamai's mPulse service is a popular commercial RUM solution that is used by thousands of websites, and it gives us a unique panoptic view of web performance. This is not your typical RUM talk. I won't be talking about implementations, product features, etc. Instead we are going to dive deep into the data and try to answer some interesting questions about the web. For example: - What is the distribution of Desktop vs Mobile vs Tablet in different geographies? - We know how often browser versions are released, but how quickly are the browsers updated? - How big of a problem is device fragmentation? By Geography? - Does battery life impact end user experience? - How often is DataSaver being used? - … and much more! Bonus: If you RVSP early enough, share a comment with some interesting insight you'd like to learn about the web. If possible I'll try to include it in the talk! Speaker: Paul Calvano (@paulcalvano), Principal Web Performance Architect at Akamai Technologies Paul Calvano has been helping enterprises improve the performance of their web applications for more than 15 years. As a Principal Web Performance Architect at Akamai, he helps customers optimize their website and mobile performance by utilizing the Akamai platform efficiently, following industry best practices, and designing solutions to help overcome technical obstacles. • FaCSSt: CSS & Performance
Ahh… CSS and performance. Two of my favourite things! But how well do they play together? It depends… In this very matter-of-fact talk, we’ll be looking at all of the different ways CSS can make our websites faster or slower. From the common and perhaps more obvious, to the unusual and obscure ways in which CSS can impact performance for better or worse. Harry Roberts (@csswizardry) is the Founder, Director at CSS Wizardry Ltd. With a client list including Google, Unilever, and the United Nations, Harry is an award-winning Consultant Front-end Architect who helps organisations and teams across the globe to plan, build, and maintain product-scale UIs. A Google Developer Expert, he writes on the subjects of CSS architecture, performance, and scalability at csswizardry.com, develops and maintains inuitcss, authored CSS Guidelines, and Tweets at @csswizardry.
