Marin Headlands: History, Hiking, and Wildlife

There is incredible history, hiking, wildlife, and beauty at the Marin Headlands, so let's spend a day discovering its treasures.

The plan is to explore the Point Bonita lighthouse, attend an open house for the restored NIKE missile site, learn about the marine ecosystem and animals at a Marine Mammal Center docent-led tour, and then wrap up by relaxing at Rodeo Beach. Then, we'll head into downtown Sausalito for an early dinner at F3: Fast Food Francais.

Schedule
12pm: Meet at the Marin Headlands Visitor Center; consolidate cars
12:20pm: Park at Point Bonita lighthouse lot
12:30pm: Start the 0.5-mile walk to Point Bonita lighthouse
12:45pm: Explore Point Bonita lighthouse
1:15pm: Start walking back to the parking lot
1:30pm: Park at NIKE Missile site
1:35pm: Tour NIKE Missile site
2:35pm: Drive to Marine Mammal Center
3pm: Marine Mammal Center tour begins
4pm: Marine Mammal Center tour ends
4:15pm: Relax at Rodeo Beach
5pm: Rodeo Beach relaxation time ends
5:15pm: Pick up all cars from Visitor Center; drive to F3: Fast Food Francais
5:30pm: Dinner at F3: Fast Food Francais

We might need to make minor adjustments to these plans based on group needs.

Important: Please buy your 3pm tour ticket for the Marine Mammal Center now -- they can sell out quickly.

Note: The half-mile hike at Point Bonita lighthouse is a bit steep in parts.

Items to bring: snacks, plenty of water, hat, sunblock, warm jacket, layered clothing, sturdy shoes (sneakers or hiking boots), and camera + binoculars (if desired)

Gorgeous views, tasty food, and -- most importantly -- great company. Thanks for coming out on what turned out to be a beautiful, clear day!

Point Bonita and the NIKE missile site will both be open today -- and it looks like it will stop raining around noon! I updated the schedule (please read the modified event details). I will be wearing a white North Face jacket -- see all of you at 12pm today at the Marin Headlands Visitor Center! Note: Cell signal is bad to nonexistent in the Marin Headlands, so if you're late/lost, you can catch up with us by following the schedule and looking for me.

Yay -- I'm so happy the Meetup site is back up after 24+ hours of DDoS attacks. I've been nervous about my inability to communicate with you guys! Please update your RSVP to "No" by 5pm today if you can't attend.

Are we still going to have a picnic if it rains heavily? I'm also afraid of the hiking conditions if its going to be really muddy or not. But we are still going.

      February 28, 2014

    • Renee

No, we won't plan to do the scheduled 11:30am picnic or the 4:15pm hike. Instead, we will focus on the lighthouse (a short, paved walk that won't be muddy), the NIKE missile site, the 3pm Marine Mammal Center tour, and food at F3 in Sausalito. The timing and order are dependent upon any site closures reported tomorrow morning. I'm happy you still plan to come -- we'll have a great time, regardless of the weather.

I've been tracking weather for the past few days and the report has gone from no rain to 70% chance of rain on Saturday. I spoke with both the visitor center and the NIKE site ranger: site closures won't be confirmed until 9:30 on Saturday morning. At a minimum, the Marine Mammal Center will be open, so let's adjust the plan, but still go. Stay tuned for an schedule update around 9:45am on Saturday morning!

This is a friendly reminder to please update your RSVP to "No" by 5pm on Thursday, February 27 if you're unable to attend. The wait list is very long, so please help us ensure as many people as possible can come. Thanks!

Still in Hawaii, will book it when I get back. On another note, are the tickets transferrable?

      February 9, 2014

    • Renee

Hi, John! My ticket order has mobile and printing options, so it looks like you can forward tickets to others, if needed.

Is there any way that we can add my husband into this trip, which I usually use the +1 function, but your group side does not provide this function. Please advise.

    January 14, 2014

    • Renee

It looks like the system wouldn't let you add the +1 because it would take us over the 10-person event limit. I manually added the +1 for you, so you're all set. I look forward to meeting you and your husband!

Hi! I am a Sierra Club Leader and love California and it's beauty. This is an ideal hike for me because I also love history. Thank you for leading this.
