July Wellington Drupal Meetup - beer, pizza, content strategy and integration

Come one, come all! To another celebration of all that is Drupal.

It's relatively short notice - just 11 days away - so make sure you RSVP straight away! This event is going to be packed with lots of awesome discussion, and will have multiple opportunities for us to share solutions, general knowledge, websites we are currently working on, strategies for getting Drupal projects completed to high levels of quality, and the general rigmarole of working in the Drupal industry.

Make sure you turn up to see all your usual Drupal mates, and don't forget that free beer and pizza.

WHEN: 1st July, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

WHERE: Catalyst IT Level 3

Newbie spotlight - An optional opportunity for new people to the group to say a quick intro and tell us a bit about what you're doing with Drupal. Are you looking for work? Are any of the organisations at the meetups hiring? Are you short on Drupal buddies or looking for a hand with a project?

Module highlight - This is a new repeating part of our agenda that we will have during every meetup. It is where those of us who have modules we'd like to talk about take the stage tell us a bit about the module that they are currently in love with and what they've used it for.

Drupal Contribution & Sprints - Each week, we will discuss contributions currently being made to the Drupal community, who is doing it, and what we can all do to help. When is the next Drupal Sprint? Where is it being ran? How can you get involved? These questions will also be answered each month.

Content Strategy - This was a big topic and high-light for many from Drupal South earlier this year. Building an amazing Drupal web system is one thing, but making sure it has the right content is entirely another. How do you advise your clients on their content strategies? Do you have any use cases or stories about content strategies that have gone really well (or not!)? How important is video, and how important is interactivity these days? Is there value in hiring content authors / copywriters / professional photographers / content strategists, or is the value of these services exaggerated?

PIZZA - Vege, gluten free available (if you have special dietary requirements, PLEASE let us know in advance by emailing directly to [masked])

Website Showcase Hotseat - Time to show off all those awesome new websites you've been working on! We will open the stage for about 15mins for people to do quick fly-overs of their recent Drupal achievements.

Scheduling Future Meetups - A quick group conversation about the scheduling of future meetups and looking at finding a time of doing them that works for everyone and doesn't clash with other meetups / communities of practice that we are all engaged in.

Third Party Integrations -  A huge strength of Drupal is it's ability to be integrated with almost anything. If it deals in standard formats, chances are you can make it work with Drupal. What are some platforms or softwares you have integrated Drupal with in the past? How did you navigate the challenges? What are common things to get wrong, or to get right: This is a great opportunity for us all to collectively share some stories about Drupal integrations we have lead in the past, and also a good chance for people currently in the middle of some hairy integrations to get some advice.

General Drupal Q & A - For the last quarter of the event we will be opening the floor to general Q & A. Need to tap into the wider wisdom of the group? In a general sense this is the most powerful function of the meetups and worth taking advantage of. Useful for newbies and veterans alike to get peer feedback, insights and leads.

ONGOING AGENDA: (These are open discussion points that anyone can contribute to at any stage and we'll also bring these up at the end of each meetup for people who stick around).

HR Needs for Wellington Drupal - Does your business have too much or too little work? Are you on the hunt for Drupal talent or brimming with it and not being acknowledged? Are you finding that you have to turn away Drupal projects due to small scalability, or are you a young designer/developer yearning for recognition and new projects? This is a chance to pool our thoughts, resources and where relevant, identify new collaborations. - A monthly opportunity to discuss anything relating to the community site we maintain.

Topics for future meetups - Have something that you're dying to discuss with the community? Come loaded with discussion topics and we can take them all down for future agenda points. What are the big issues you face in your organisation with Drupal, and what are you doing about it?

We need to keep adding to this list!

Ongoing topics in the Drupal eco-system currently identified as talking points are:

- Drupal 8 - Drupal advocacy - Symphony - Twig - PHP 5.4 - Using HTML5 - Building NZ's Drupal economy - Website showcases

We always need new topics so feel free to help us add to this list! Email your thoughts to [masked]

REFRESHMENTS: Beer and pizza are provided by the very lovely Sparks Interactive. Thanks Sparks! You guys are awesome! If only everyone else were as good at providing beer and pizza as you... you have a special place in our heart.

And thanks Catalyst! Without you guys, there is no meeting room - a sad thought indeed. So cheers to Catalyst and Sparks for supporting the Wellington Drupal community, we all really appreciate it! :)

CONTRIBUTE: Want to share something specific with the group? These events are always open for people to take the stage, run a presentation or anything that they think might be interest to the wider group. Get in touch! Organisation of these events is provided by Xequals. Please contact us if you'd like contribute to an event.

I've posted my notes from the meetup to the New Zealand group on - feel free to add any additions and corrections:
If the group finds it semi-useful, I'll continue doing it for future meetups.

That's awesome, thanks David. I think the idea of posting discussion summaries on could be a great idea. Let's talk more about this at the next meetup, which I'm set to schedule later tonight :)

For Alex - new case study on d.o on agregating 4,000 RSS feeds! Doesn't go into the technical details though.

Thanks David, that's awesome! Really great case study. At the very least, proves that what we're trying to do is possible and has a precedent. I may actually email them directly for some more tips on how they pulled it off. Seems having two instances of Drupal specialising in different tasks and talking to each other is the way to go.

Apols - I won't be able to make it tonight - have a good meet-up!

A small item/shout-out for the agenda.
As presented in the PHP Meetup last night,
is upcoming on August 27th-29th at Victoria University (Business school)

Early bird tickets Deadline: June 30 !!! to save $120

They've not yet hit a lot of momentum with the promotion and bookings, so it would be cool to sign up, or get your business to send you if you are interested.

*I* don't know anything about more than half of what is on the agenda, so I guess that's what would make it a valuable learning experience. Go Wellie!
