Talk and Olive Oil Tasting Hosted by the Amazing Reid Family

Jamie and Diana Reid run the very beautiful Willowstream Estate in Martinborough and produce the multi award winning Huangarua Olives, Extra Virgin Olive Oil. They have very kindly offered to come alone and give us a tasting and a bit of a talk about their oil and methods of production.

The Reid family produces two varieties of extra virgin olive oil and although they are by far my favorites, what I would like to do is add another four bottles from different producers to the mix to give us a broader understanding of oils from the Martinborough region. Depending on the number of people attending this event will work out about $10 per person to cover the cost of oil, bread and maybe a vino or two.

If the weather is fine I am happy to host this one in my garden. Would appreciate it if someone could offer a venue in case of inclement weather.

If you are interested in reading a bit more about Huangarua Olive oil I wrote a section in my blog about them last month. http://nzculinaryexplorer.blogspot.co.nz/

I really enjoyed the event, I learnt so much more about the growing, production and the purchase of a good Olive Oil. So informative.
Thanks or Organising this Lucy and the venue Jo.

Thanks to Jo for letting me have this event at her home and to Diana for all the great olive info. Really enjoyed it. Was well worth all that prep of paperwork. Learned loads. Biggest lesson was that when it comes to oil price doesn't necessarily mean quality.
Will post the oil info sheet in the more/files section of the site.
Thanks to all of you for coming and for making it such an interesting experience.

I had a great time tasting and learning about the different olives used to make oil. Thank you to the organizers and Jo for opening up her home to us.

Really annoying but I may have to pull out of tonight :( Been battling a headache all afternoon, and I'm still at work and it's nearly 6pm. Might just head home soon and have a quiet night. I already buy the Kapiti olive oil, but would be great to hear of other recommendations after tonight. Will just drool and use my imagination as to how nice they all taste.

Of course, I am delighted to see you on the list.
How are you getting there? Do you need a lift? I am going to be a bit tied up but if you post a note requesting a lift on the site I am sure someone will be able to oblige.
    Looking forward to seeing you.

Great Debbie. Thank you for the feedback. I just want to stress that you get off at the Hawtry Tce stop and not before. The bus does a bit of a tiki tour of the neighbourhood and people worry that they have missed the stop but the driver will let you know if you ask them. It's about a 50 minute trip.

Hi Debbie, Newlands bus No 54 comes with a very short walk of our door. you can pick it up in Courtney Place, Lambton Quay, Thorndon Quay, Central bus depot. It stops opposite Te Kiteroa Grove at the Hawtry Tce stop. We are just 2 houses up.

Anyone driving from the CBD that can give me a lift?

    January 25, 2012

Hi Lucy. Do we have a venue for this yet? While I am very happy to pay ahead of time, and agree completely about your reasoning, I need to know that this event will be at a place I can drive to on a weeknight. For me, this would need to be in Wellington, eg I would not drive to the Wairarapa and probably not to the Hutt. So once I have some ideas of where we will meet, very happy to hand over my money. It looks to be a great night.

One week to go until this event. Will email my bank details for those attending. $10 fee for this event. This will be used to pay for oil, bread and wine. All payments for this event need to be received no later than Fri 3rd of Feb. Sorry to be so draconian but past events have taught us that putting a payment deadline on events that require prior purchase of produce avoids the event organiser having to fund the thing and being out of pocket if people don't turn up. Should be a tasty testing!
