What we're about

Hello there,

My name is Caroline and this is the Wellington Portrait Photography Meet Up Group.

I don’t know about you, but I really like taking photographs of people and when I do, I like to make them fun, tell a story about the person in the picture and show them in their best light, whether they think of themselves as being photogenic or not.

Personally I love photographing people that don’t think that they are photogenic as having spectacular picture of themselves looking their best can be a game changer in terms of their self-image. Trust me!

I am no photography expert but I have been a portrait photographer for 12 years. For me, the camera is a creative tool and the best camera to have is the one that you have with you. You don’t need experience as a photographer or a model to enjoy this snap happy creative art.

I am interested in encouraging creativity in others and being creatively inspired by others in the group. This group will be co-organised as soon as possible, so if that interests you don't be afraid to volunteer! If you are interested in providing technical tips you are welcome to, however this group will be more about the story telling involved in portrait photography.

What we do:

For the first six weeks we will meet up once a fortnight on a Wednesday night, 7pm to 8:30pm with the default location being my partner’s home in Maungaraki, Lower Hutt. Please bring a snack to share and we will be social while we discuss pictures that we like, have taken, that we are in or would like to be in. You can bring printed images or your own laptop or memory stick of portrait images that you want to share.

We will collectively provide feedback as we see each other’s favourite images and discuss future possible projects. You are welcome if you are an amateur or professional photographer, an enthusiastic or reluctant model, a experienced or apprentice editor or simply a lover of portrait art!

PANCAKE BREAKFAST - FREE FOR ALL

Benedicts Cafe

Our MEET and GREET on Wednesday night appeared to go successfully for almost all of our 11 attendees . Despite this, however, there were several people that couldn't attend on the night and several others that can't attend on those alternate Wednesdays at all, Some of our members are very new and I haven't made contact with them directly yet. Rather than have members wait for the next Wednesday night MEET and GREET, I thought we would develop a slightly different regular event that has less organisational burden and formality than the MEET and GREETs. My local cafe does all-you-can-eat pancake breakfasts for $10 on Saturdays and has additionally whole brunch menu that is reasonably priced and delicious. Maungaraki is a fairly central suburb on the hill above Petone and Benedict's Cafe is one minute off State Highway 2 at the Petone interchange. It has ample and convenient parking outside right outside it or not far away. Benedict's Cafe: https://www.benedictscafe.co.nz/about.php Depending on the numbers of people that wish to come, I thought that I would reserve a table for members who want to have brunch together to network, shoot the breeze, talk the technicals or simply enjoy light social contact with other who share interests in Portrait Photography and photography in general. I also thought this would be an idea opportunity for members to Bring, Buy or Swap their photography-related equipment, skills and experiences. If there is enough interest and impetus, I will invite members to attend another event held in conjunction with and directly after this Pancake Breakfast - Free For All, that being a opportunity to wander through Percy's Reserve,. We would go with the intention of practicing portrait photography in a park and woodland environment. I have both been photographed and photographed others at Percy's Reserve. It is a magical environment (I once wanted to get married there) and, weather dependant, I think it would be a great opportunity to share the love of Portrait Photography together. Percy's Reserve: http://www.huttcity.govt.nz/Leisure--Culture/parkgardens/Our-parks-gardens-and-reserves/Percy-Scenic-Reserve/ - a fabulous treasure for those in the know.
