We were going to do this last year but the weather turned bad! At the moment the forecast is excellent...
Time: Overnighter (stay in Kapakapanui Hut)
Difficulty: Difficult (muddy!)

Kapakapanui is an isolated minor peak of 1102 metres in the southwest corner of the range, dominating the skyline from Paraparaumu and Waikanae.

The open summit of Kapakapanui is one of the best viewpoints in the Tararua Range, revealing not only the full extent of the Southern Crossing, but also the featureless forested maze of the Renata-Maymorn-Akatarawa uplands, as well as the sweep of the Kapiti coastline and the dramatic silhouette of Kapiti Island 22 km to the west.

The climb is steep and the track rough and muddy in places, with the forest still bearing the marks of the devastating 1936 cyclonic storm.

This will be done as an overnighter...

We will leave Wellington early and drive up to Waikanae. From the start of the track it is 3-4 hours to the hut, very steep in some places.

We will get to the hut and claim out spots and have some lunch.

Then if the weather is good there is the option to head up to the summit--another hour (again, steep).

Sunday morning will need to start at a decent time and head up to the summit and then it's 2-3 hours back. Depending on the weather we can swap directions and do the 2-3 route on the Saturday.
