Dobson Loop in the southern Tararua Range

* * * Apologies, this walk is arranged ONLY for those participating in the Kaitoke Wellington Tramping Group Christmas Party * * *

This 5 to 6 hr return daytrip in the southern Tararua Range takes you up towards the Marchant Ridge line with brilliant views down the valley and into the Wairarapa before dropping sharply down to the Tauherenikau River and a stop somewhere interesting for a break. After break the trail then follows Smith Creek with its fine stands of red/hard beech forest, over Puffer saddle and back down to the start.
How to get there:Turn off State Highway 2 north of Upper Hutt onto Marchant Rd at the YMCA Camp Kaitoke turnoff, before the Rimutaka Hill. Follow Marchant Rd and turn off right onto Kiwi Ranch Rd and take the gravel road up to the car park just before the YMCA camp.
Difficulty 7/10 - You need a good level of fitness for this walk: The walk up towards Marchant ridge is a steady climb before dropping down quite steeply to the Tauherenikau River. The walkout has a scramble up a landslip and down a near vertical drop along the way, so much care is required. Then onto Puffer saddle which requires some effort before heading to the car park.
What to bring. We will be walking in heavily forested country. You can get lost if you wander off the track. Wind and waterproof outer-layers, something for lunch, water, sturdy shoes preferably hiking boots. Warm clothing is essential.
Time. 5-6 hours or so - depending on how long we stop at the Tauherenikau River.
This event will be postponed only if the weather forecast is for torrential rain.
