Great Iowa Pet Expo ($6/person)

Lots of vendors, freebies, and demonstrations at the Great Iowa Pet Expo! You can bring your Fido, but you must sign a release (available on their website or at the door).

We'll meet outside at the entrance of the 4H Building and walk in together. (The closest gate is gate 9.) The cost of admission is:

Adults: $6
Seniors: $5
Children (6 – 12): $3
Children (5 and under): Free

The Great Iowa Pet Expo runs on Saturday and Sunday so there is plenty of time to go there if you can't go with the Club.

Turns out the team that won the stay contest is in Jocie and I's obedience class. ;) Here's to hoping Jocie and I will be able to compete next year and give them a run for their money. lol

We did not make it to the expo, feeling a little under the weather :(

Feel better, just getting over the virus that seems to be going around!

Didn't really find a great selection of groomers or boarding facilities. There were alot of booths but did not really find what I was looking for. Was nice to be able to bring your dog tho. Decided at the last minute to take Gracie and she was better behaved than I thought she would be and so were the kids that attended.

I don't think they've ever really had very many groomers or boarding facilities there. I think there have been 3 daycares before. Seems to be fewer booths each year. The vendor fee probably stops a lot of people from having booths. Sorry we didn't see you!

Mary I know how difficult it is to find groomers and trust them. I have a good one at the Barking Lot in Urbandale named Trish if that helps.

Fun day at the Pet Expo! It's still going on Sunday 10-4. The agility trial is next door in the Jacobson building too.

Lexi and I had a pretty good time, especially talking to Pam and Sable. It did not seem as big as it has in the past -- less vendors and no llamas like last year. Lots of different types of dogs, though. It is a good place to people watch. I will be back tomorrow afternoon with the Golden Retriever group RAGOM.

Jocianna and I are getting our CGC test taken at 11 am on Saturday and we might enter the stay contest. :) thank goodness I got someone to switch shifts that day so we will be there from 9am till 1pm I think.

According to their web site, the expo starts at 10 am. so I don't know if the doors are open to the public at 9 or not.

I was planning on spaying a Tom as well. That's why I had mentioned 9am. :)

I will be out there before 2:00, so I'll meet you inside the front door at the registration table.

Hey, Pam! Saw your picture in the Des Moines Register!! You were at a pet blessing at a United Methodist Church. Did you get a copy?

      October 18, 2013

    • Pam

I did get a copy, but I could use another one if you have it. Thought I'd send the picture to my sister. It was a very small pet blessing as it was cool and drizzly out. They must have been expecting a bigger turnout to have a photographer there.

Not sure if I am attending or not at this point... I'll check in if I decide to come so you will know I am there.

I'm debating if I should bring my dog.... I will prob. Just be standing outside if I do....

    October 16, 2013

    • Pam

The pet expo is all indoors in the 4-H building, so you wouldn't be able to see anything if you stay outside!

      October 17, 2013

They are doing a pet blessing at 4:00 on Saturday at the pet expo. I'll have Dylan with me for sure but may bring Kes and Kira for the pet blessing. Not sure about that since that would be a long day for them. I'm going to be helping with the Des Moines Kennel Club's booth in the morning. DMOTC's agility trial is in the Jacobson building, and they'll have a few vendors there too. If you want to watch any of the agility, it would be better to go in the morning though as they'll be close to being done for the day by 2:00. The agility trial is Saturday and Sunday. If you want to see the best dogs, go in the morning as they start with the highest levels at 8 a.m. I'll be checking out their vendors too.

I am *not* going to bring any of my Bassets. The last two times I went it was crowded and I haven't trained my boys well enough to be calm and stay focused on me in crowds like that (humans and dogs). I took Louie one year and Barney another year to make sure it wasn't just one dog's experience. They are both very people and dog friendly, but that environment requires a very well trained and very well socialized, calm dog. I am not sure some of the attendees who bring their dogs think about how that environment can affect their dogs and they are so busy looking at the booths and shopping that they can't see their dogs have anxiety, or they have unrealistic expectations of their dog to be the perfect dog that day. Plus, there are lots of kids there and hardly any of them ask to pet your dog before reaching towards them, sometimes so quick you never see them coming! If any of you are hesitant, I would say don't bring your dogs this Saturday.

Sorry to hear you're not bringing any of your bassets, Sable! This is truly a pet expo so people there do just have pets. Of course, they need to be dogs that are not aggressive and are okay with being in a crowd and around other dogs. Dogs that can attend the farmer's market or go to busy dog parks should be okay at the pet expo. I've actually had a better experience with kids in Iowa than in other states. I'm usually asked by the parent or the child if they can pet my dogs in this state, but have had problems in other states.

I will be with our group on Saturday and then volunteering in the RAGOM booth on Sunday afternoon. Lexi will most likey be with me on Sunday. She loved being there last year and meeting the llamas as well as all of the other dogs that came through.

I will also be working the booth for RAGOM (Retrieve a Golden of Minnesota) sometime this weekend. They should have their volunteer schedule set sometime soon.
