Meet outside Beckenham Junction rail station, on ticket office side.
There are good car parking facilities at or very near the station. Perhaps the best parking with the most available spaces is in St Georges Road, next to St Georges Church, about 100 metres from the station. Generally speaking, it is difficult to find any free parking nearby.
At the beginning of the walk please note that there are toilets available on the main London bound platform at Beckenham Junction (Platform 2).
We will make our way down Beckenham High Street, stopping at an interesting local landmark (for David Bowie fans), then pass through the nearby Croydon Recreation Park where Bowie performed in his early pre-celebrity days. We will then head to Kelsey Park, walking down one side of the park and out on to a main road, before crossing into a patch of woodland and walking along a mixture of quiet and busier pavemented roads, including a busy road running between Langley Park Golf Course. A toilet/quick drink stop is possible at The Railway PH at this point.
We then take an urban and semi-rural route to Keston where we will stop for lunch. Food is available at either The Fox or The Greyhound PHs but it should be ok if you want to eat your own sandwiches outside The Greyhound or on the green opposite – assuming we purchase drinks at The Greyhound as well.
After lunch we make our way back towards Beckenham via a woodland route to Hayes (opportunity for a toilet break/quick drink stop at Hayes as well). From there we take a footpath alongside the railway track between Hayes and West Wickham back to the golf course road, then proceeding along a wide and attractive road to the opposite side of Kelsey Park again, and exiting the park back to Beckenham Junction Station a few minutes away. For anyone who wants to eat/drink at the end of the walk there are plenty of options near the station, and there is a PH directly opposite the station.
Please note that there is a £2 voluntary contribution for non-Rambler members towards meetup fees. Paid up members of the Ramblers are welcome on any of our walks, but we would encourage you to RSVP. This is to give our volunteer walk leaders an idea of how many are attending, and also to keep the numbers manageable. If, on the day of the walk, you are still on the waiting list and a Rambler member, please let the walk leader know you are coming. On the day of the walk only, the group leader can be contacted on[masked] - voice calls only (no texts).
