What we're about

Book Club for Sci-Fi nerds? This is a book club that will focus on classic and new books within the Science Fiction / Fantasy genre.

LIST: I've attempted to create a Google Form where we can submit Science Fiction/Fantasy suggestions about comics, books, movies and TV shows that we have enjoyed. Sci/Fantasy/Nerdi-ish Books, TV, Movies etc. - Google Forms (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1Ip1K-93dNIY7qHzEQzXfUrwZvU9Ivo-Zp2O4L90EETQ/edit) I think I have made the list so that anyone can submit a form as many times as you have ideas, and we can all look in the spreadsheet where the results are. To go directly to the list click here- Sci/Fantasy/Nerdi-ish List - Google Sheets (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1mux5jYjfRPX1l7qPh6RdkvsQB3sNkdKwE7wIhg8tOBA/edit#gid=2032835633).

Locations may change as we explore local businesses. Please suggest locations! I've again attempted to create a public form here- LWL SciFi Meetup Location List - Google Forms (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1gFJw1q9tZG8B3Pnr-tYZryFzJrxafLa_F_Ao-OCmMf0/edit). To go directly to the list click here- LWL SciFi Meetup Location List - Google Sheets (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1JXE015x5npOUBkXNMIVd9PHk6r3RsoirnoGh46Lc7_o/edit#gid=478079459).

Right now the lists are open - should we have issues with responses I can explore the complexities of making it private.

RULES:

• Book Meetings are once per month. In between book meetings are general get-togethers where any SciFi/Fantasy topic can be discussed.

• Each member will have the opportunity to propose a book to be read (volunteers are encouraged). That member also will lead the in-person discussion for the book when it occurs.

September Book Meeting

Digby's Pub and Patio

For September we are reading Space Vikings by H Beam Piper. Ten thousand refugees from the losing side of The Big War (The System States War of The Cosmic Computer) fled far beyond the boundaries of the Terran Federation and colonized the planet Excalibur. By the beginning of Space Viking, they had expanded to a handful of Sword Worlds (so-called because they are named after legendary swords) and had grown to a total population of three and a half billion, organized in a feudal system of kingdoms, duchies, and other small states, ruled by frequently warring noblemen. Despite their isolation and the political instability, the inhabitants managed to retain a high level of technology, including space flight. One day, a starship rediscovered the Old Federation. Civilization had collapsed, presumably due to the war; many of the planets had regressed to varying stages of semi-barbarism. Taking advantage of the situation, "Space Vikings" (reminiscent of Norse Vikings) proceeded to raid the poorly defended Federation worlds over the next three hundred years for loot. Annie will lead this discussion for this book.
