US Coast Guard Event - Pigeon River

The USCG Auxiliary invites you and your membership to an exciting, informative, and fun event on May 18th at Hemlock Crossing County Park in West Olive, Michigan. We are calling it, "Paddlepalooza!”

In coordination with the National Safe Boating Council’s “Ready! Set! Wear It!” campaign, the event includes both shore side and on-the-water activities. Starting at the park, there will be boating safely education sessions and equally important, courtesy vessel exams. The Coast Guard considers any kayak, canoe, etc., found adrift as a Search and Rescue case. The application of an identification sticker on each vessel reduces the amount of time and resources required to follow up on a potential missing person.

Paddlers will meet and register at Hemlock Crossing County Park, 8115 West Olive Road, anytime between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.for a short presentation on paddleboat safety. After a check of recommended safety equipment, the paddlers begin a float trip downstream on Pigeon River. Food and refreshments will be provided at a home on the river near the bridge on Lakeshore Drive. Transportation for the paddlers and their vessels will be available from the end point back to Hemlock Crossing Park if required.

I would like to ask you to publicize the event to your membership. We are dedicated to keeping paddle sports a safe and fun activity for everyone. Please let me know if you are able to support this event.

Very Respectfully,

Ralph Fairbanks

A great time thanks to the USCG Auxiliary. Great put in made it easy and carefree. Would I do it again? Planning it out already.

This was a totally awesome experience, from: loading and unloading the kayak, to spending a beautiful day on the river, and meeting new people. Also, the learning experience provided by the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, and their graciously offering up their home, hospitality, and even feeding us lunch! What was the address of Officer Fairbanks? Maybe we could send them a thank you card in the mail. :-)

Kathy, his business card is in the packet you received. I'm sure you can send it to his office and they'll make sure he gets it.

Thanks to everyone that came. I truly hope everyone learned something new about boating safety and had a good time. A special thank you to Officer Fairbanks and his wife for allowing us in to their home and feeding us. Thanks also to the men of the CG Auxiliary for all the help.
