September Pine and Manistee Campout

Update:  Spoke with Jackie the proprietor and we will be located in 4 group sites A,B,C & D instead of the Pines (A,B,C & D group sites are next to one another).  Just be sure to tell her you are with WMKC when you check in.   Weather is too far away to have a good forecast, will update Wednesday night.  I check several sources and generally have a good idea of what the weather will be.

Map to Hodenpyl Dam

Twin Oaks Campground Link

Let no one be blind sided by this:

• Group campsite is for tents and it is $11 per person per night all tents welcome.

• RV with 30 amp electric $32 per night.  RV sites can have up to 4 people, and tents are okay on a site with a trailer.

This is an excellent campground so I decided to keep the venue for a change of pace.  This is the first weekend permits are no longer needed for the Pine River, and often it's a slow time for the campground.

Twin Oaks campground has a large group tent site, several full service pull through sites and cabins to rent as well as a very nice rec hall and shower facility.  I have reserved the large group site for the club.  The fee is $11 per person per night on the group site, and you will pay this upon arrival at the office.  Reserving the group site just means we have it to ourselves for the weekend.  You still need to pay per person.

For anyone wanting to use a camper unit, the campground is usually very empty during this weekend, but you may want to reserve a site.  Just call Twin Oaks Campground [masked]) and they will be happy to take your reservation.  Very friendly people.

F R I D A Y . . .

Slight change of plans:

Friday 5 Sept @ noon  MANISTEE RIVER:  We will depart camp at noon to drop off cars at Red bridge on our way to Hodenpyle Dam.  Please note the differences in shuttle style on this event, where we will drop off the cars first and then proceed to the put-in.  Be prepared to carry either boats or extra people.  Be flexible, and check with me at camp before we depart.

For the people meeting us at Hodenpyl Dam on Friday, we will shuttle you back after the paddle.  DIRECTIONS TO HODENPYL DAM From MESICK, MI:  From the railroad tracks in the center of Mesick continue 1.5 miles northwest on M115 to Hodenply Dam Road on the left (the first road after you cross the river). You can recognize Hodenpyl Dam road by the big trout picture up on the south west hillside. Follow Hodenpyl Dam road for about 4 miles to a dirt road on the left - there's a sign for Consumer's Energy Hodenpyl Power Plant, and also a sign for Blueberry Lane, but your navigator calls it Hodenpyl Dam Road - and drive about half a mile to the top of the Dam. If you notice the metal guardrail alongside the road and see that the road is starting to climb, you missed the turn.

S A T U R D A Y . . .

Saturday 6 Sept @ 10AM  PINE RIVER: We will be paddling from Dobson's Bridge to Low Bridge on Saturday, and will  meetup at Dobson's Bridge at 10:00 AM.  Prior to that, we will stage some return shuttle vehicles at Low Bridge and pile em on for the trip to Dobson.  Twin Oaks Campground is only 5 minutes (1.7 miles) from the Low Bridge pullout, so it makes sense to just stage the vehicles. Or we may just park shuttles and bring people to get their cars.

SATURDAY NIGHT POTLUCK

07:00 pm In the group camping area.

S U N D A Y . . .

Sunday paddle will be discussed around the fire on Saturday night, and we will form a plan at that time.

****If you are new to WMKC please be aware that we enjoy our alcoholic beverages off-river only due to safety and other concerns.  Please respect the event host (It's awkward approaching someone mid-trip) and the clubs position on this matter.  We’ll enjoy one with you at the campfire or at a venue after the event.****

Running out of superlatives for this group. Starting with the sweet family campground, JC's fAnTasTIc safety talk, two days of paddling the pine, a scrumptious potluck, and most important the synchronicity and comaraderie

I am humbled by your praise Maggie. Glad you got something out of my safety talk.

The boiling manistee after the 6 inches of rain was a whole new experience for me. Then the awesome rapids of the pine brought a smile to my face every run. It was excellent getting to know do many good people. Thanks again to JC for organizing this event!!

Was hoping to join the paddle today but have decided to wait for another event. FYI we have had a tremendous amount of rain here through the night and there are flash flood warnings in the northern region. Hope weather improves soon for your group!

JC - Due to a minor wrinkle, I will not make it Thor the Friday paddle. I expect to be at the campground when you get back and want to paddle both Saturdsy and Sunday.

      September 5, 2014

  • Michael K.

I'll be there Saturday at the put in at 10:00. See you there!

    September 4, 2014

Anyone have plans for Fri dinner? Potluck or dinner in town? Does any post a cancellation if it's raining? I know, it's a water sport!!

    September 4, 2014

  • Chris G.

Is anybody considering the Friday paddle for Sunday? If I come down Friday I have to take a day off work which isn't a problem but I figured I'd just get a feel if anybody was interested in doing that one Sunday instead.

    1 · September 3, 2014

    • Bill G

Chris: You can ask at Saturday's bonfire or potluck if anyone is interested in the Manistee paddle. There may be some that aren't able to do it on Friday -- who might be interested in it as a Sunday paddle.

      September 4, 2014

    • Chris G.

OK.. well I'm just going to do the Fri one now, i'll see you at the dam.

      September 4, 2014

If I drive up Friday morning (not to the campground, but to the Manistee) where is best to meet (put-in or take-out), and at what time? Thanks!

OK I'll wait at the put in Friday, thanks

about how long will the float be on Saturday? It's been a long time since I've been on the pine.

    September 2, 2014

John, that run takes about 5 hours from put in to pull out.

      September 2, 2014

I will most likely miss Fridays paddle. I'll be at the campground Friday night and do both the Saturday and Sunday paddle.

    September 2, 2014

  • Virginia

Hi - your group has had some fantastic paddles which have not quite worked out timing wise yet. Even though I can't camp the weekend, I am wondering about joining the paddle on Friday or maybe Saturday?? If not this time hope to soon!
    Thanks!

    Virginia

    August 31, 2014

    • JC R.

Hi Virginia, I would recommend the Friday paddle for many reasons, foremost is the smaller group size. For that one, we will actually meet at the campground, so just be there a little before that, or if you know how to get to Hodenpyl Dam, you could meet us there about 12:30. Please let me know and be explicit, and we will keep an eye out for you.

JC in re reading the info for Saturday... and since I am not coming from the campground... should I meet you at Low bridge or Dobson? And at what time?

    August 31, 2014

  • Bill G

I spoke with Jackie at Twin Oaks Campground, and she said anytime for checkin is okay. As as far as Sunday goes, for those who are paddling -- we won't have any checkout time (you can pack-up your tents in the morning before Sunday's paddle, OR leave them up, and break camp after the paddle).

    2 · August 29, 2014

    • JC R.

Thanks Bill. I forgot to verify that, but it is the way this campground has been in the past. I am kind of hoping the group really likes this campground, because in my opinion it is one of the best.

      2 · August 30, 2014

  • Kathy S

JC, I'm assuming we have the group site for Thursday night too... Is that correct? If so what time is check in? I will need to leave by Noon or 1pm at the latest on Sunday, so I'm sure I won't be able to do a Sunday paddle.

    August 26, 2014

    • JC R.

I haven't explicitly reserved the group site for Thursday Kathy, but I am sure there will not be anybody on it, so just tell the lady that you are with WMKC and that should be good. I'll probably be there Thursday night. Sunday is up in the air.

      1 · August 26, 2014

    • JC R.

Not sure what time check in is. The lady I spoke to is pretty nice so it's probably not an issue.

      August 28, 2014

  • Kristine V.

I will not be making the friday paddle. I will be planning to meet you all at dobson bridge for Saturday. If you change the plans and times, would someone please call. I will be planning on camping on the group site saturday night so save me a spot... :-). I will be interested in a sunday paddle.

    August 28, 2014

    • JC R.

Rock solid on the put-in time Kristine. No worries. We'll have room for you.

I have never kayaked the Pine. What can I expect?

    1 · August 27, 2014

    • Sara Van D.

I am a bit of an amateur. Is this going to be too challenging?

      August 28, 2014

    • JC R.

We give a good safety brief before the paddle. Ask questions, let the group know you haven't done the Pine before. Have fun.

      August 28, 2014

  • Tom K.

I just talked with Twin Oaks and it is okay to park RV's on the group site at $11 per person with no electric. I told her that I'd be arriving on Thursday and it's no problem.

    August 27, 2014

    • JC R.

Your TAB is OK Tom, but not the big RVs, the site isn't that big.

      August 27, 2014

  • Chris G.

Do you know what part of the Manistee that'll be done on this trip? Will that be Sunday?

    August 20, 2014

    • JC R.

I moved the Manistee to Friday Chris. And it's from Hodenpyl Dam to Red Bridge, a very fun run of about 4 hours.
