West With the Night by Beryl Markham
Memoir, Adventure (320 Pages) "West with the Night" is an exceptional autobiography filled with a strong spirit, fascinating events, and beautiful words. Beryl Markham was raised by her father on a large farm in British East Africa in the early twentieth century; as a child she preferred spear hunting with the native Masai to her school lessons. At seventeen, when her father lost their farm and went to Peru, she chose to stay in Africa and began a highly successful career as a race horse trainer. In her twenties she gave up horses and started flying airplanes, becoming the first woman in East Africa to be granted a commercial pilot's license, then the first woman to fly the Atlantic from east to west. Lyrically and philosophically, "West With the Night" covers each of these parts of her life. Beryl Markham writes hunting stories filled with danger and tension, then turns and discusses the different qualities of silence or what it is like to fly alone over water for forty hours: "Being alone in an aeroplane for even so short a time as a night and a day, irrevocably alone, with nothing to observe but your instruments and your own hands in the semi-darkness, nothing to contemplate but your own small courage....such an experience can be as startling as the first awareness of a stranger walking by your side at night. You are the stranger. " When Hemingway read Markham's book, he wrote to his editor, Maxwell Perkins: "She has written so well, and marvelously well, that I was completely ashamed of myself as a writer . . . [She] can write rings around all of us who consider ourselves as writers . . . It is really a bloody wonderful book." This is the story of an extraordinary woman. Enjoy!

What we're about

Public Group

Do you love to read thought provoking books? Does the thought of discussing them over a glass of fine wine fill you with joy and a sense that all is right with the world? Well we may be the group for you!

We are a welcoming group of individuals who meet each month to discuss, debate, laugh and share meaningful insights about our book of the month. Our members submit intriguing fictional and non-fictional book suggestions (recent releases as well as an occasional classic ) and new members often comment on how much they love our lineup. We also try to do a monthly social get together to promote friendship within the group. The people who join are bright, witty and have so many insights to share that it's a shame to limit our get togethers to just the book club.

Our meetup place of choice is Flight 112 in Elmhurst, which has been mentioned in the Best of Yelp and also in Time Out Chicago as one of the top 50 bars. The wine, the small plates and the atmosphere, along with our monthly book discussions are truly to be savored.

We look forward to having new members join us. Please note, however, we are all about active involvement and thought provoking discussion. It is difficult to run a book club without that. Our expectation is that our members will attend at least 3 to 4 of our meetups or social outings per year. If this sounds good to you, we would love to have you join us!
