• Compliance Traps & Trolls

    Total Wine

Your favorite wine tasting and WordPress Meetup is back again! We're calling the meetup "Compliance - Traps and Trolls" as we'll be focusing on multiple topics of compliance, including: PCI, GDPR, Accessibility and what it could cost you to ignore these. Of course, there will also be wine tasting that's free for all attendees courtesy of Total Wine. Our speaker, Sumner Davenport of Sumner Davenport & Associates, LLC, creates, manages & protects the online brand & reputation of her clients. Compliance is her specific area of expertise. With the updates and changes in online privacy laws, ADA Accessibility, Federal, State and local industry rules it has become essential to make sure your website is compliant and what you post everywhere else is also compliant. Sumner will cover these specifics and also provide handouts with recommended resources that may help you with your compliance issues.

  • West Valley WordPress Meetup - September Page Builder Summit

Your favorite wine tasting and WordPress meetup is back again on September 11th at Total Wine. We're calling this our "Page Builder Summit" as we'll be focusing on the popular WordPress phenomenon known as "page builders". Of course, there will also be wine tasting that's free for all attendees courtesy of Total Wine. The theme for this one is "Pampered by Pinot". Page builders have become a quick and easy way to build pages on your WordPress website. These ubiquitous drag and drop tools have become an increasingly prevalent part of the WordPress ecosystem over the past few years and we're well overdue to address this subject with the scrutiny it deserves. Our first speaker, Nick Jacob, is a freelance WordPress developer and a front end web developer at Guitar Center Inc's corporate office in Westlake Village. He will be presenting an in-depth demonstration of Beaver Builder, one of the most popular and respected page builders on the market. Our second speaker, Sean Conklin, is the founder at Coded Commerce, a WordPress and WooCommerce development shop based in West Hills. Sean will be demonstrating Gutenberg, a soon-to-be addition to WordPress core that will change the way pages are built in WordPress and could make you think twice about purchasing a page builder. He will also spend some time discussing Divi, the popular page builder from Elegant Themes. We are excited to announce that Sean Conklin has agreed to be a co-organizer for the West Valley WordPress Meetup Group. Sean brings a wealth of experience, talent and passion for WordPress to our group! Don't miss WordCamp LA held September 21-23rd. Tickets are still available. https://2018.la.wordcamp.org/

  • West Valley WordPress Meetup at Total Wine in Woodland Hills May Edition

The first meetup at Total Wine was a big success and we'll be back for the second edition in May. RSVP and mark your calendars for May 24th from 6:30–8:00 pm! We are excited to have not one but TWO great talks presented by our very own Meetup members, Renee Johnson and Nick Jacob. We'll also be having a complimentary wine tasting with the theme "Vive La France" from our good friends at Total Wine. Ooh la la, it doesn't get much better than this! MEETUP AGENDA CUSTOMIZING YOUR WORDPRESS THEME WITH CSS You bought a WordPress theme with tons of customization features along with a drag-and-drop page builder plugin that lets you become a web designer without having to know any code. Things are going great but, wait a second...you want your buttons to animate differently than your theme will allow. Also, you would like your logo to appear larger, but there is no option to do this. The list keeps going on and on until things are feeling a bit hopeless... But then in comes Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) to the rescue! By learning CSS, you'll gain control over how your website looks so almost any display-related issue can be resolved with simple, easy to use code. This presentation will give you a general overview of CSS, how it works and how to use it on your WordPress website. Presented by West Valley WordPress meetup member, Nick Jacob (http://nsjdesign.com/). BEYOND THE VISUAL EDITOR: USING CODE TO MAKE CHANGES ON YOUR SITE You can certainly build a website using WordPress without code, however knowing a bit more about some of the languages that power the platform will take your skills to the next level. We'll step beyond the comfort zone of the visual editor (and page builders) to explore several examples where using code can enhance your ability to customize your site. Presented by West Valley WordPress meetup member, Renee Johnson (http://reneesvirtualoffice.com/). VIVE LA FRANCE THEME COMPLIMENTARY WINE TASTING Join us as we explore the wine-making regions of France with a short presentation by the experts from Total Wine. SHMOOZING AND SOCIAL TIME Please RSVP for the event so that we can get an accurate headcount for Total Wine. And for those of you who have not joined our group, please signup! It's free and we can all stay connected. See you soon! Nick Jacob & Andrew Behla West Valley WordPress Meetup Group Organizers WHERE THE HECK IS TOTAL WINE, WOODLAND HILLS? If you are not familiar with the Total Wine location at the Westfield Village in Woodland Hills, the location is a bit tricky to find. First off, it's on the south end of the complex (close to REI). The best place to park is to enter on Erwin (east of Topanga) and make a left to the parking structure alley, just before the McDonald's and behind REI. Get a ticket and then make the first right (don't go up the parking ramp). Go straight to the back and look for a sign for Total Wine parking on the left. This is at the rear of their store. If you make another left, they have a preferred lot that is closer to the store entrance. The store entrance will be on the left, and the meeting room is immediately to the right when you enter the store. If you are coming from other parts of the Village mall, look for Sweetfin Poke and Cava restaurants. Total Wine is in the alley, just off from the main set of stores, east of where the kid's playground. We'll be in the presentation room that is just to the right of the front entrance, behind the checkout.

  • West Valley WordPress Meetup at Calabasas Library

    Calabasas Library

Hey West Valley WordPress Meetup Members! Mark your calendars as we're back in action on Tuesday, January 17th from 6:00 - 7:30 pm at the Calabasas Library (https://www.google.com/maps/place/Calabasas+Library/@34.152538,-118.646624,15z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x19395a720b052349!8m2!3d34.152538!4d-118.646624)! For the next meetup we'll have a discussion that Andrew Behla led at the Orange County WordCamp last July (some of you may recall there was a plan to have this discussion at our last meetup, but The Local Peasant was just too darn loud). We hope you can join us to offer your experience and insight as well. Even if you are a solo webmaster of your own site, you will surely be able to glean some insight into how to better manage and run your business. If there is time, we'll also discuss Matt Mullenweg's State of the Word (https://poststatus.com/matt-mullenweg-state-word-2016/) delivered at WordCamp US 2016. From the integration of the REST API into WordPress core in version 4.7 to his urging developers to "Learn Javascript Deeply", there is a ton of exciting WordPress news to cover. DISCUSSION TOPIC: HOW TO BUILD A SUSTAINABLE WORDPRESS AGENCY In 2008 Andrew embarked on a huge adventure and leap of faith. He tore down the house that he and his wife owned to rebuild it, acting as a general contractor with on the job training. Along the way he learned valuable and often challenging lessons in project management, working with teams, and making the right choices to stay on track and reach the goal of moving back in 6 months to their new home. By applying the real world lessons learned along the way to Behla Design (https://behladesign.com/), his Woodland Hills, CA based design and development agency, he was able to expand his business and make it more sustainable and successful. In this discussion he will share actionable advice that helped make his business more successful while achieving a better work-life balance. Please RSVP for the event so that we can get an accurate headcount for the library. And for those of you who have not joined our group, please signup! It's free and we can all stay connected.
