Resources for New Paddleboarders West of Boston

The majority of meetups planned in this group are oriented towards people who have paddled at least a bit and are comfortable on a SUP. They're rarely intended for someone who's never done it before as we simply get on the water and paddle off. The organizers pick a time and location to paddle but generally aren't trained leaders or instructors. Also, relatively few meetups are at places where rentals are available - partly because there are limited locations that rent SUPs, especially inland. Some of the rental places will allow their boards to be taken off-site, but of course it's way more convienient to have your own board.

You may find paddleboarding easier than you would expect. While you might go for a swim occasionally when you start out, for most people standing and staying up on the board is not as hard as it looks and soon they rarely if ever fall in - unless they want to! However, if you don't have a friend who can show you the ropes (and has an extra board!) getting started with some kind of intro class is helpful. Below is a list of places "West-of-Boston" that offer SUP rentals and/or classes.

More options can of course be found on the North and South shores, which may be added to the list later.

Note on the State Park locations - If you don't have a annual pass, you'll usually need to pay a parking fee to get into any of the state parks. But if you plan ahead, public libraries usually have passes you can check out for the day and get in free.

(as of 2018 season )

Classes and rentals at Hopkinton State Park on the Hopkinton Reservoir, Lake Cochituate State Park on Lake Cochituate, and at the Boathouse near I-95 in Newton on the Charles River. (They also offer rentals on Spot Pond in Stoneham, and Lake Quannapowitt in Wakefield.)

Charles River Canoe and Kayak (https://paddleboston....)

Classes and rentals on the Charles River in Waltham, Nahanton Park in Newton, and in Allston/Brighton off Soldiers Field Road. (They also offer rentals on the Mystic River in Somerville, and by Kendall Square in Cambridge.)

Regatta Point Community Sailing (https://www.regattapo...)

Classes and rentals in Westborough and Worcester.

Nashoba Paddler (http://www.nashobapad...)

Rentals on the Nashua River in Groton. (I've not seen them offer SUP classes directly, but I've heard of someone offering a few classes there during the 2018 season - see https://www.solarflow...)

UMass Lowell Kayak Center ()

Classes and rentals on the Merrimack.

Littleton Parks and Recreation (https://www.littleton...)

Rentals at Long Lake Beach in Littleton. (There is a fairly hefty for the 'burbs daily parking fee that I was told you can avoid by parking at the school nearbyish and walking there. Not positive, but I don't think a board rental includes parking. There's also a small daily beach fee. Not sure if that applies if you're renting and launching off the boat ramp, but probably.)

LLBean ()

Offers classes - check their class finder for what they have scheduled around Boston.

REI ()

Offers classes - check their class finder for what they have scheduled around Boston.

EMS (http://www.emsoutdoor...)

Rentals on Lake Pearl in Wrentham. (Small daily entry fee?)
