Let's Play an RPG

This meetup is for anyone interested in playing in (or running) a RPG Game...starting off as an introductory/one-off session but potentially becoming something more long term.

I've tentatively scheduled the session for Sunday, July 21, but I'd consider doing it on Saturday, July 27 as well if that is better for people.  We are using doodle to determine best play times.  Go to http://doodle.com/23nu8vkphfcbvhv9 and let us know what days/times are best for you!

The actual RPG we decide to go with will be up to the group, but we are considering all listed below. Please let me know which sparks your interest in the comments. The idea is we will have introductory sessions ready to go for all of them and we can vote and decide.

1) Marvel Heroics, some info can be found at http://boardgamegeek.com/rpg/16869/marvel-heroic-roleplaying

2) One-off Durance campaign, system info at http://www.bullypulpitgames.com/games/durance

3) Dungeon World campaign, bought this as well and would love to run it...it's getting rave reviews and essentially has all the good stuff from D&D without all the crappy stuff. As close to a perfect Fantasy RPG as I've ever seen...here's a review http://www.rpg.net/reviews/archive/15/15793.phtml

4) A GURPS campaign set either in a ShadowRun like Cyberpunk setting or a time travelling Infinite Worlds setting.  If you don't know anything about GURPS, here's a lite edition of the basic rules http://www.ligo.caltech.edu/~tdcreigh/Downloads/gurpslite4.pdf

Here's some more info on GURPS http://dungeonfantastic.blogspot.com/2012/06/why-i-like-gurps.html

Cheers.

I thought both games were a blast. Even if we only got to play GURPs for 15 minutes. Thanks to both Brendan and Jonathan for running the show. I'm excited to get into GURPs next time and keep breaking jaws in Marvel Heroics.

Also, just to mention it (and I will a couple of more times here and there just in case people miss this) ... I am at the tail end of play testing a mini-system I created named Elthos RPG. It comes with a rule book, but more interestingly, perhaps, a web application that runs the rules, which can be described as medium-light weight, and story-focus-friendly. It's in advanced beta, reasonably stable, and for me and my play testers really has been pretty good. So if anyone is interested in trying it out, I can provide you with a link to the website. Feel free to ask, but as I don't want to spam a lot about it I'll just leave it at - its out there if you want to give it a whirl. Just drop me a line and I'll post a link to it for you. I would love to get some more feedback on it. ;)

GURPS was looking pretty interesting, I have to say. I'm looking forward to your campaign as well. Though we didn't get far, it did manage to peak my interest. I'm hoping I can make it to more than a few games. By the way, I should probably, for that reason, pass my character over to someone who can to be there more consistently, come to think of it. Doesn't make much sense for the Leader to be AOL more than half the time. :P *sob*

Thanks everyone for coming. I had a great time. I'm going to post a tentative new meetup tonight for either August 10 or 11 and put up another Doodle for the best days/times and change as needed.

Thanks for giving us a taste of two very interesting RPGs, Marvel Heroes and GURPS!

Just so I can plan the rest of my day; how long are we going to play?

    July 21, 2013

    • Jonathan

It's up to everyone else how long, but the store closes at 7 pm.

Everyone coming tomorrow, if you have dice and could bring them, that would be helpful. I have some, but maybe not enough. And maybe bring a pen/pencil and paper as well.

I'm interested in the GURPS games. I've never played that system or a Shadowrun game. I've got plenty of D&D experience though and 2 bags of dice.

I've put together a thread on the discussion board to help you all get acquainted with Marvel Heroic, character datafiles, and what you can expect if we decide to play it. Please take a look and let me know if you have any questions!

Yep, I"m gone this weekend. Have fun, you all!

Just to compliment what Brendan said down below, no one is expected to know anything about the games ahead of time. The DMs will come prepared to teach you everything you need to know.

I want to suggest a couple things and see what people think. First, if we are lucky enough to get enough players, like more than six or seven we should consider running two different games. We definitely have two people, me and Brendan, who are willing to DM.

Second, if we get only five or six players, we might consider actually running two games back to back. If we start at noon, it would mean about an hour for player creation and introductions, and two hours of actual play time for each game, with an hour break in between (i.e. noon to 7, 7 hours total) Brendan and me will have to come prepared with encounters/scenarios that can be realistically completed within two hours.

The benefit of doing this is someone like Mark who can't make it till 4 pm would get to play in the second session.

Finally, if we are really ambitious and get a lot of players we could actually try for 3 or even 4 games.

This sounds totally reasonable to me as long as Sunday the 21st is still the Game Day. I now have to Read up on the systems so I am not totally out of the loop lol.

Don't beat yourself up trying to learn everything before the meetup, Mike. I think all these systems have a pretty simple learning curve, so we'll have plenty of time to learn the basics that evening.

Just so you all know, I'm hoping to be able to make it to this, but I may have to go to Cleveland to help my parents pack for a move...

I'll come prepared to lead the Marvel Heroics session. If anybody is interested, they can find information on the game by following Jon's link or doing a basic Google search, however you won't need to bring anything other than some dice (if you have any) and your creativity.

Great. I plan to be there. Also note: mingling with the locals at Modern Myths might drum up spontaneous players as well. We can always offer. :)

... but of course - I will be there, however, after 4pm sometime. That's most likely the best I can do, though I'll try to get there earlier if possible. Family obligations, you know.

I'm going to be able to make this one but I will probably be a little late. Start without me. :)
