WHMG Seventh Anniversary Hike: Popolopen Torne

  • Aug 23, 2014 · 4:00 PM

Please help us celebrate our seventh anniversary with a late afternoon moderate-to-strenuous hike up Popolopen Torne, a rugged peak just south of West Point. Beautiful views of the Hudson River valley. Rocky trails and one long sustained hill climb with some rock scrambling required. Please plan to bring something delicious to share, and we'll have a quick picnic at the top.

Difficulty: Moderate-to-strenuous. Some steep exposed rock scrambling.

Distance: 4 miles

Estimated Time: 3 hours

Map: NY/NJ TC #119

Google Map link to Fort Montgomery trailhead: http://maps.google.com/maps?daddr=41.323886,-73.98777&hl=en&sll=41.323334,-73.986788&sspn=0.004089,0.008256&vpsrc=0&mra=mift&mrsp=1&sz=18&t=h&z=18

This is very important -- please note: The parking lot area generally fills up fast, so please try to arrange carpooling if possible. Also, there is an overflow parking lot on Rte 9W just north of Fort Montgomery (Google Map coordinates:[masked],[masked]), in case the main lot is full.

Weather: Rain cancels.

Equipment: Sturdy hiking shoes. Water -- at least two liters. Hiking poles if needed. Headlamp or flashlight. Trail map. Fully charged cell phone.

Dog policy: Dogs are welcome on this hike, but must be kept on leash and under control at all times.

Guests: No guests for this hike. All hikers must be members of WHMG.

Important Note: Be certain to check this webpage and your email prior to the hike for any last-minute changes or cancellations.

Haha, i like that nickname, "hike crasher".I just had my middle name legally changed to "Picnic". I refuse to do anything ever again that doesn't end with a giant picnic ;). Great people, great hike, great times. Can't wait for the next one. Thanks Peter

Peter certainly knows how to mark an anniversary! Spectacular PO-PO-LO-PEN as a stage setting, picture perfect clouds at the horizon and - as in any formal celebration - a buffet to remember! Our hike-crasher- Justin D. commented to me that "from now he won't sign up to anything that doesn't come with a picnic..." ! :) Peter, you made an impression! ....and I never ate so much in one day....

Hi I am going on this hike and am leaving from northern Yonkers if anyone wants to carpool since there is limited parking. I don't mind driving and I have plenty of gas!

    August 21, 2014

  • Peter

Please note that there is limited parking at the Fort Montgomery parking area. Please be diligent in seeking out carpooling opportunities. Also, please note that there is another lot approximately 0.3 miles north of the Fort Montgomery lot. Allow yourselves plenty of extra time for parking -- we will be starting the hike promptly at 4pm and we would hate to miss your participation due to late arrival.

Liz, Have a wonderful time!! Time flies by, but the group you created, which was unheard of back then, is doing amazingly well and your legacy moves on. Sorry that we won't be able to make it.

Thanks Steve J. for all the wonderful trails you introduced to the group, including Mt. Alander, AT Pawling, Macedonia, CT Bear Mt and Hunter (encounter with black flies!!) which are still our all-time favorites.
