Fun hike up Breakneck and Mt. Taurus and hike the trails through the ruins of the old Cornish Estate. Great viewpoints looking both north and south on the Hudson.
Distance: Approx 8 miles Duration: Approx 4.5hrs to 5 hrs depending on group and number of breaks.
This is NOT a beginners hike and one should not overestimate his/her abilities.
The first .8 mile is a rock scramble that's fun yet challenging. We will move at a moderate pace. From the Breakneck Trailhead on Rt. 9D (by the tunnel), we will do the rock scramble up the white trail and stay on that trail to the Blue trail. We will turn right on Blue towards Mt. Taurus.
From Mt. Taurus there will be nice views of Cold Spring and the US Military Academy. We we then descend on the White (Washburn Trail) then right on Yellow (Undercliff Trail) to the Red Trail. We will then turn left on Red and head back to Rt. 9D and to the parking lot.
There will be several nice viewpoints along the trail. Bring a camera for some great photos! Hikers should have the appropriate attire and footwear, a map, first aid, water and snacks/lunch.
What to bring, plenty of water - 3 to four bottles, snacks, sunscreen, hat, change of shirt or change of clothes for ride home.
