Hey I'm a vegan that just moved to Westchester. Hoping to make some veggie friends and find new spots in Westchester to eat!

Hey there! I'm actually in the Bronx, but spend a great deal of time in Westchester, especially going to k-12 in New Rochelle :)

Nice that you and Alexsis are in the same town!!

Love Wobble Cafe Alexsis..They cater to diet..We had two allergy dietary issues that needed to be addressed and they did a good job

Jeff, I think I've stated this to you in the past. I'm not one for censorship, but this has really gone overboard. If you don't want to attend an event because it's against your personal ethics, then please don't. There is no need to go on tirades on how you think it's unacceptable. If you want to host a vegan potluck in your home, then certainly you can do so. Despite how much I can appreciate your dedication and passion, I'll be honest, I wouldn't attend.

As others have stated, Westchester isn't exactly the bastion of veganism. While some may prefer to patronize vegetarian/vegan-only businesses, it does send a message if we show support for businesses that provide vegan options. There are also omnivorous members who are looking to transition towards a vegetarian or vegan diet. It wouldn't be prudent to turn them away, especially when there's an opportunity to connect, make new friends, learn and maybe make a change along the way.

Jeff, you're being a troll. You shared your opinion. There is no need to repeat yourself over and over again.

Holy Mackrel... If he did not go on a Tirade before he sure did now... I am omnivore because that is what makes me healthy..My body gets messed up with a purely vegan diet ( believe me I am many years aware of nutritional issues and how to go about proper vegan nutrition.) I do however support those that choose to go vegan for whatever their reasons and if Jeff is listening still I would become Vegan for the health benefit not for an animal... While I love my animals and have respect for them, if an animal is raised for consumption or to produce food for me and my family that is what it is for.

    Hello--
Sorry to back out an hour before the meeting time-- I actually only realized a few minutes ago that I am off the waiting list and on the going list. Unfortunately things came up and I can't make it tonight now. I went to Bareburger about a month ago and thought it was terrific! I am a vegetarian and also feel it's important to support places in the area that have veggie/ vegan options on the menu. There are so few around here. Have fun! Hope to meet you all in the future :)

On a happier note: Our meetup is still on for tomorrow at 7pm!! Carlo & I looking forward to seeing you all. We're going to see if we can expand the reservation number.

    2 · February 9, 2014

  • Jeff

I have to honestly say that I have reservations supporting a place that with "vegan options" or not, has so much meat on the menu and that is what they are primarily about. It is also unsettling how they list the poor animals that have been killed in order to showcase their "variety": "Our menu features a variety of meats, including traditional beef, chicken, turkey and lamb; exotic options such as elk, bison, ostrich and boar; and mushroom, veggie and black bean burgers for our vegetarian and vegan guests."

    • Jeff

Jodie,I can understand how you feel also. As I said to Adam I appreciate the small steps it often takes with others. I hope I’m not coming across as judgmental in any way to anyone. It’s never going to help the cause for the animals by putting others on the defensive. I have come to learn that there are ways to communicate and to demonstrate that are not confrontational.
There is also the idea that the vegan only businesses are the ones who need and likely deserve our support more. I can’t say that I’ve never eaten out a place that wasn’t 100% vegan. I can say I prefer not to and give my business to the vegan only restaurants. The problem with Bareburger is that they are so meat-centered.

      February 8, 2014

    • Jeff

If others see that a vegan only restaurant is always busy and thriving , doesn’t that also send a message to the rest of the world? Again it is my personal choice to not be around a piece of meat and it’s associated violence. And I’m happy to calmly and respectfully explain that to anyone who would like to know why.

      February 8, 2014

  • Alison L.

Jeff, you raise valid points but ranting on here isn’t going to solve anything especially since you didn’t offer any alternative ideas. If you aren’t happy with the selection of events being posted by our organizers, then I suggest you organize and host some events that would make you happier or at least suggest some things to them, I am sure they would welcome some new ideas instead of having to do everything themselves.

    1 · February 8, 2014

    • Jeff

      Hi Alison,
Sorry you took my expression as ranting. I just believe I have a valid concern with supporting a business who's main product and promotion is for animal flesh; anyone who is vegan would be ethically opposed to. As this is an open forum and I'm not attacking anyone nor telling anyone what they should or shouldn't do, I took the opportunity to share some thoughts and maybe have us look at what we support.
      kindly
      Jeff

      February 8, 2014

    • Jeff

The kind of events that I would suggest would be more vegan potlucks held at individual's homes. There is nothing more warming, satisfying and connecting as a vegan potluck and the conversation that accompanies one. An opportunity to share food that you've made and thoughts you've had about respecting life. It helps us to further open and deepen our hearts. No animal products on adjacent tables. These are popular with other vegan groups I belong to.

  • Jana

Hey, Jeff: If you don't like it, don't go. Easy peasy. Organize your own event at a Jeff Acceptable Place.

    1 · February 8, 2014

    • Jeff

Hi Jana. I agree with you. I thought of all the animals' lives that have been needlessly taken that Bareburger contributes to in order to appease people's palates and so I have decided not to go and support such a business. Thanks for your thoughts.

      February 8, 2014

  • Jeff

This might be an acceptable place to go to for someone who eats a plant-based diet for health reasons. But for anyone who truly cares about changing the way animals are commodified I would think that they would not be at all comfortable with the proliferation of animal products on this menu.
Pleas let us remember that animals are meant to be here with us, not for us.
Is it possible we could make better choices to show our love and respect? For me Bareburger isn't one of them.

    February 8, 2014

  • Jeff

Sadly they promote the Humane Myth with the them offering these definitions from their website-"hu·mane·ley raised
    (hyoo-meyn-lee reyzd)
of, relating to, or produced by animals whose welfare has been protected through all stages of the animal’s life, including handling and slaughter"
When does true compassion for others include killing them?
    "free-range
    (free-reynj)
of, relating to, or produced by animals, especially poultry, that range freely for food, rather than being confined in an enclosure"

By now most of us know of the concerns of the loose requirements of free range. And again in the end, the poor animal is killed to put "food" on someone's plate.

"It's better to be safe than sorry" they say. So, let's reschedule for the same time next Monday. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. Have a good day, week and stay safe and warm! More snow rolling through tomorrow night.

    February 3, 2014

  • Alison L.

Snow is supposed to lighten up or stop by 5pm...(40% chance of at that point).

    February 3, 2014

  • Alison L.

If you reschedule, I vote for Monday...I can't do Sundays. :-) Supposed to snow all next weekend but too early to tell - things can change quickly. Heck, this was supposed to originally only be an inch (now 4-6"). :-)

    February 3, 2014

  • Carmella

Will make a decision on whether to reschedule by 12pm today.

Hey guys- just thought I'd let you know- they have a vegan slider burger (quinoa) but the slider buns are not vegan. They will however make a full sized burger with the same fixings (vegan cheese and hold the special sauce- better yet, sub the red pepper pesto). Just in case anyone decided to go for those!

Carmella, Is this the place in the Best Buy complex or is it further down Central Ave?

    January 27, 2014

      Yes, it's by Best Buy.

      January 27, 2014

Thank you Jodie, see the rest of you guys there tomorrow - hope snow will not be a prob

I forgot I'm coming back from Chicago that night. I am excited about that restaurant, though, and will try to check it out!

If all goes well, hopefully, we can do a second one :)

      Have a safe trip!
