E/4(7000’)/81 This ride starts climbing as soon as you leave the parking lot! We’ll climb Tunnel Road, visit Inspiration Point in Tilden Park and climb a couple of the 3 Bears. B and C riders have a short but challenging 400’ climb up Happy Valley Road. D riders challenge “Pig Farm Hill” and Reliez Valley Road. While there are lots of hills, most are not steep and the views are gorgeous. E’s add more challenging hills, including Toyonal Drive with its 20% grade. Rain cancels.

LDT Update - Berkeley Hills 4/20/13

This week brings a foray into the beautiful hills above Berkeley and Oakland. Unlike our last attempt, the weather looks to be fabulous, rewarding us with spectacular views of San Francisco Bay from the high ridges. The ride includes lots of climbing and descending, but most of the hills are not very steep. B and C riders have one short but challenging climb on Happy Valley Road, and the E riders test their legs on steeper climbs.

Our meeting point this Saturday is the Rockridge BART Station. There is no official public restroom at the start, but an enterprising individual can probably find a local coffee shop for relief. Also, while we've never had a vehicle break-in at this location with our group, its a good idea to leave extra valuables at home, and especially not leave them outside or visible in your vehicle.

Guy Shuman and Bill Sherwin plan to lead the C- group, with the remaining group leaders TBD. If you can help lead or co-lead one of the groups please contact me. Gary Virshup provided GPS maps of the B, C and D Routes (see below).

Our safety emphasis this week is the flip side of last week: "Hear and be Heard". Communication is very important when bicycling, especially when in a group. When you see a hazard ahead or a car coming up behind (or in front on a narrow road) please communicate that to your riding partners. Usually a verbal signal is best such as "car up" or "rock" or "quicksand". At other times pointing out a hazard with a hand signal is best (remember we always point at the hazard). DO NOT use headphones! Leave your music behind and return safely so you can enjoy to it when you get home!

Looking forward to seeing you this Saturday!

Guy Shuman
