HIKE Serpents Trail

Hike Serpent’s Trail

There are great views off the wide trail, and should be a beautiful star-filled evening as we return to the parking lot.

It has a bit of history behind it as it used to be the road to Glade Park, nicknamed the “Most Crooked Road in the World”. It is 3.7 miles roundtrip, a constant climb and perfect for those of us in training.

When/Where:

Devil’s Kitchen Parking Area, located just inside of the East entrance of the Monument, on the left side of the road. From Dos Hombres on Broadway, take Monument Road South for 4.3 miles to the parking area.

In the past, we have met at the Dos Hombres for trips inside the Monument to facilitate carpooling with people who have vehicle passes; please state in your RSVP if you’re interested in this.

Bring:

  • Sturdy hiking boots or running-type shoes with good traction
  • Ice grippers are recommended since there may still be some slick spots
  • Trekking poles can be helpful up and down hill as well as if there are icy areas on the trail
  • Bring layers so you can start the hike cool and avoid sweating, then layer up as the temperatures drop
  • Water and snacks
  • You’re welcome to bring a pack stuffed with extra weight if you are training for WSA 14ers! FYI: A gallon of water weighs about 8 pounds

Cost:

If you drive you may need to pay the $10 NPS entrance fee (fee station is usually closed this time of year by 5 PM. Many members have an annual pass and I’m sure they would be willing to drive you in.

Dogs:

Darn! It is the Monument so Fido is not allowed.

Great views and company. The run up was tougher than expected, but it felt great afterwards. I'll have to keep doing it until I make it without having to walk to catch my breath.

I found a pair of 180's Exolite Ear Warmers (like earmuffs only way cooler) last night on the way down S.T. If they belong to you, let me know.

Ok. I can drop them off anywhere in G.J. or hold onto to them until the next hike. Up to you.

This hike was a good time. A couple of us hit it with a brisk walk while others went at a more comfortable pace, but I think it was fun for all. It was a great hike for allowing some to get in a large workout, while others could take their time. Good hike, but not as intense as others suggested. Perfect for this Tuesday.

Perfect evening for a perfect hike: clear, crisp, no wind and dark when not in the glow of the city lights or headlamps. I never tire of the city views at night from various Monument hikes. Serpents is perfect for the casual hiker or for brisk walk - sort of run training.

Never been on it. Not as steep as reputed to be. Great gradual grade and walk to heights overlooking the valley. Glad to be able to get on it after all this time.

Another great hike - thanks to Andy, Wes and Doug for putting this together. Also thanks to Wes for pushing the pace. It was good to meet Dee-Dee and Mary Jo.

The trail was not too steep or long, but just perfect for an evening hike. Great choice!

I will come a little early and attempt to run up, then come down and meet the group and walk back up. See you on the trail.

Mary, really?! Wow! Wish I could make it. It's a good one to start training on for the summer hikes. Nice and steep, with great views!

There are so many steep trails with good views around the monument that I haven't gotten around to this one.
