Hike and Bike Glenwood Canyon with a Hot Springs Pool Finish!

Come join me for abike ride up the

Glenwood Canyon starting in Glenwood springs on the bike path , which is named the Glenwood Canyon Recreation Path that runs between the Colorado River and I-70. To view the beautiful Glenwood Canyon before the summer crowds come to town.

The bike path is relatively flat the total length is 16.2 from Glenwood springs to Dotsero.

Along the way we will stop to hike

up Hanging Lake or you can continue on the bike path if you do not want to hike.

After the bike ride we will go to the Glenwood Springs hot springs to relax our legs after the bike/hike trip. Then after a soak in the Glenwood

Springs if you desire we will walk across the highway and get some food to fill the empty stomachs after the bike/hike/soak.

Meet at the Glenwood Springs Hot Springs Lodge and Pool parking lot at 10:00 am and then we will take off from there. The path is past the Vapor Caves and the Art Center.

Bring your bike, water, camera, clothes to bike and hike in, swimsuit and towel for pool and money for pool and food afterwards.

Here is information about hot springs pool: http://www.hotspringspool.com/

An altogether awesome day, fine job of organizing

  • Suzy N.

What an awesome day! Glenwood Canyon and Hanging Lake were just perfect today. The sky cleared and we had the best weather possible for our activities. I got a real taste of what it's like to ride along the river out there in early May - literally - Love the taste of caddis flies in the morning! Tastes like...VICTORY! The biking and the hiking were both really fun. Missed out on the soak in the pool, but our exclusive tailgate in the parking lot MORE than made up for it!!! Brenna did an absolutely phenomenal job with the planning and execution of this full day of adventure. I hope you'll get the promotion to Assistant Organizer and will be planning more of these day trips, because today was a blast!

Thank you everyone for attending the event. The event was a big success and everyone showing up made the event possible. A big applause for everyone from grand junction, montrose, and anyone making a drive for making the effort to show up and participate. It was a great combination of activities. I look forward to seeing you all on future trips.

What a day -- thanks so very much for organizing all the parts, pieces and people, Brenna. Bike, hike and swim were the perfect combo for me; oh. and dinner with a brew. Thanks for riding together Dee Dee and sharing our enjoyment of Ole Garrison.

Towels can be rented for $2.50 each. We will meet towards the back of the parking lot the big parking lot next to pool under the bridge/overpass. Look for the bright yellow Saturn vehicle.

Remember to bring snacks/lunch we will have lunch at hanging lake. Bring a bike lock to lock up your bike at the hanging lake trailhead for your own safety. Looking forward to meeting everyone and having a fun day! If you need to get a hold of me best to call me[masked] will not be checking email Saturday morning. Tessa Lemke from the Roaring Fork Valley is also helping out with leading the group. Tessa will have couple of balloons tied to her bicycle. There is a total of about 23 people on the trip, people from the glenwood springs/carbondale area are also joining us. Don't forget a swim suit if you plan on going swimming. Trail to hanging lake might be wet.

Carpool from Palisade Park n Ride - 8:15 AM

If you want to carpool for Saturday's trip to the Glenwood area, meet at the Palisade Park n Ride - Palisade exit from I-70.

Please be at the Palisade Park n Ride by about 8 or 8:15 so we can leave by about 8:30. We will need a little time to jockey around bikes from one vehicle to another so please help us get out of there in time for the 10 AM rendezvous in Glenwood.

Better to be a little early than a little late. We have 18 people going, many of whom want to carpool from GJ. Please do not make all of them wait for you to be part of the carpool (I am the classic chronic, pull in at the last minute guy, but not today!).

Ok it looks like we are going to have quite a few of us going from GJ so shall we meet some place and figure out a carpool from there?

    May 9, 2013

    • Doug Van E.

We have many members who come from the east end of the valley so it is our usual habit to meet at the Palisade Park n Ride at the Palisade exit from I-70. That way folks out east or coming up from Delta-Montrose can easily get to the meetup place without having to back track.

I am excited to meet everyone this weekend. Thank you everyone from grand junction area making the trip to support this outing. I am open to suggestions for future trips in the roaring fork valley and surrounding areas that grand junction people are interested in.

The path is officially open so bring the bike and hike/walking shoes to do the bike path and hanging lake.

    1 · April 29, 2013

    • Brenna O

The bike path is hard surface surface road. so a road bike will be fine.

      1 · May 2, 2013

    • Suzy N.

Mine's a road bike, too. The path will be great for us, I'm sure.

      1 · May 4, 2013

  • Brenna O

thanks carl for the heads up. I looked it up and the path is officially still closed. I called cdot and they told me people can go at there own risks.
At this point I will keep looking and if the path does not open by May 11, 2013 the alternative plan would be to carpool to hike hanging lake by it self or we can bike towards aspen for a designate time period. If we hike only or bike only the plan will be still to go to pool afterwards. Let me know if anyone has a preference of bike or hike only in combination with pool.
    Thanks
Thank you Doug for the great write up of the trip.

I've ridden it when it was "closed" before. The only place where you can't get through is where the dam is. I can't remember if Hanging Lake is before or after the dam.

Looking forward to biking in Glenwood canyon, used to live in the area & have biked it many times, & the pool after is always a treat, after dinner I will head back to Jct. I have a passenger seat available with bike rack, if anyone in Jct. is interested.

    April 28, 2013

  • Brenna O

I checked with cdot and the glenwood canyon bike path is open!!

So bring your bike and we will bike the glenwood canyon and hike hanging lake.
Also bring snacks and a lunch thinking that we would have snack/lunch at the lake.
Bring a bike lock if you desiree to lock up bike while we are hiking hanging lake.

Let me know ahead of time if people would be interested in staying at my place possible. Depending on when people from grand junction arrive if you come the night before I would be interested in meeting for dinner or possible have a potluck at my place. still need to check with landlord but let me know if people would be interested in doing that.

Just FYI, portions of the path can flood during peak run off which is usually around May end. We should be fine because of low snow levels and this far ahead of peak flow.

Me and Ron (and Jenn?) will be heading back to Montrose after soak and wherever we'll go eat. But thanks for extending the invitation.

Patrick has to work, unfortunately, so it will just be me. I have a rack for 2 bikes, so one additional can fit on it if somebody wants to ride with me. Gas money appreciated!

Truck it is. Montrose entourage will probably travel over McClure Pass and not thru GJ. It is 20 miles less and more scenic.

I have car room for three of us and bike rack for 3. A fourth person could be possible if bike fits in trunk with removable front wheel. Dee dee coming with us ? are we organizing in PR palisade?

So everyone knows the best and fastest way to get ahold of me is telephone/text. I do not have internet on my phone so the morning of once I leave my house I will not be able to communicate with people through internet, email or the meetup website.

I am interested in this. Need to get my bike up and going. Several yrs ago I roller-bladed this path. Great path along the river. And would like to try the hike to "hanging lake" so beautiful.

I'm in! Now I'll HAVE to get my flat tire fixed! The Hanging Lake hike is a nice one. I got some beautiful pics there last September, stopping for a few hours on the return from peak fall sunrise photo trip at Maroon Bells.

Depending on how many people drive from Grand junction a couple of people might be able to stay at my place (it might be a coach or spot on the floor) but I would need to know ahead of time and I have to check with my landlord.
