Black Canyon Kayak and Hot Springs Soak

  • Boulder City River Runners --
  • Join us kayaking the Colorado River for the day- 9.5 miles of it.  Doug and Mary had originally included this an option for the Zion Thanksgiving weekend festivities,  but due to the driving and kayaking time opted out.

The plan is to enter the river below the dam via the portal road accessed by Boulder City River Riders.

We will use their kayaks. They pick up and shuttle us back at the end of the day ($69) from Willow Beach.  They retrieve our required permits ($22). Only 45 total permits are issued per day by the National Park Service and only to companies; so to assure your opportunity, decide quickly.

Call them to  reserve your permit and make plans to shuttle either their or your kayak. Please mention my name (Meg Parsons) since this is an unguided trip.  [masked]

All reports is that the day will be enjoyable and scenic with waterfalls, wildlife, sauna caves, and hot springs.

Bring own food, water, and clothing in dry bags or double plastic. Estimated 8 hr. day. Temperature is typically 65-75 degrees.  Water flow from dam determines speed of the water, thus time to take paddling.  There can be wind too, but typically this time of year not much.  This is rated class I paddling.

We are staying in Boulder City at the Hoover Dam Lodge the night before and after.

The earlier start times have the most time on the scenic river and body relaxing hot springs. There are 3 hot springs and a natural steam cave along our route.

Laney and Terri, Since the Thanksgiving Zion location was changed we are postponing our trip to April. Are you interested in joining us? We have requested April 7th. Or are you going to keep this day and go on your own? Sorry for the switch. Meg

Sounds like fun! I haven't done this trip and I am flexible on the start time. Where are you staying in Boulder City on Sunday night?

Hoover Dam Lodge which is across street from river runners. I booked on Expedia.

It's a great trip, but I think I will be heading to New Mexico after Thanksgiving in Moab. I usually do this as a hike down White wash from Hwy 93. It IS possible to camp near Arizona Hot Springs, and there is a potty. I didn't know about Boulder City River Runners, but maybe next time I'lll get them to shuttle me and my boat down below the dam, and go for several days.
I'd recommend getting an early start, the days are short and the canyon shady then.

I have done this trip on the river about 5 times and have walked down to 2 of the 3 hot springs and the steam cave. This is a knock-out fabulous trip. If you like hot springs, huge scenic canyon walls and flat, green water paddling this will be a 'must-do' trip.
