Join us kayaking the Colorado River for the day- 9.5 miles of it. Doug and Mary had originally included this an option for the Zion Thanksgiving weekend festivities, but due to the driving and kayaking time opted out.
The plan is to enter the river below the dam via the portal road accessed by Boulder City River Riders.
We will use their kayaks. They pick up and shuttle us back at the end of the day ($69) from Willow Beach. They retrieve our required permits ($22). Only 45 total permits are issued per day by the National Park Service and only to companies; so to assure your opportunity, decide quickly.
Call them to reserve your permit and make plans to shuttle either their or your kayak. Please mention my name (Meg Parsons) since this is an unguided trip. [masked]
All reports is that the day will be enjoyable and scenic with waterfalls, wildlife, sauna caves, and hot springs.
Bring own food, water, and clothing in dry bags or double plastic. Estimated 8 hr. day. Temperature is typically 65-75 degrees. Water flow from dam determines speed of the water, thus time to take paddling. There can be wind too, but typically this time of year not much. This is rated class I paddling.
We are staying in Boulder City at the Hoover Dam Lodge the night before and after.
The earlier start times have the most time on the scenic river and body relaxing hot springs. There are 3 hot springs and a natural steam cave along our route.
