FINAL PORTRAIT, Laemmle Royal, Sunday, 3/25, 3:20 PM
Why this movie: Written and directed by the multitalented Stanley Tucci, starring Academy Award winner Geoffrey Rush, Tony Shalhoub, and possible handsomest man on earth, Armie Hammer. Bomb potential: Low, but there’s always a risk with independent films promising much and delivering little. Tickets: Available online at Laemmle’s website: . Tickets are General admission. Trailer: Rotten Tomatoes: Dinner after the movie will be announced in a separate meetup a few days before this one. In 1964, while on a short trip to Paris, the American writer and art-lover James Lord is asked by his friend, the world-renowned artist Alberto Giacometti, to sit for a portrait. The process, Giacometti assures Lord, will take only a few days. Flattered and intrigued, Lord agrees. So begins not only the story of a touching and offbeat friendship, but, seen through the eyes of Lord, a uniquely revealing insight into the beauty, frustration, profundity and, at times, downright chaos of the artistic process. FINAL PORTRAIT is a bewitching portrait of a genius, and of a friendship between two men who are utterly different, yet increasingly bonded through a single, ever-evolving act of creativity. It is a film which shines a light on the artistic process itself, by turns exhilarating, exasperating and bewildering, questioning whether the gift of a great artist is a blessing or a curse.

What we're about

Public Group

This group is about some of the best things in the world: friends, film, and food, not necessarily in that order. Our movie choices are very eclectic, including old ones, new ones, independent, foreign, and the biggest of big studio productions. There's something magical about seeing a movie on a big screen with a crowd of other people, especially friends. Comedies are funnier, thrillers are scarier, and tear-jerkers are tearier when the experience is shared.

Our main venues are The Landmark, the Nuart, Laemmle's Royal, and the Sundance Sunset Cinema, and our membership dues are $6 per year. After the meetup costs are met, any extra money will be donated to The American Film Institute and Film Independent. We're not about making money from this meetup. We mostly want people who truly love the movies and will attend our events.
