Not So Urban Athletics: Canoe Camping on the Delaware River

  • This location is shown only to members

  • Price: $82.00 /per person

    Refund policy

  • Okay, this spring and summer I've taken you guys on more daring and unique adventures and you haven't let me down yet with your willingness to try something new. I'm going to turn the wick up a little further for this event. I love to camp out. I love to paddle. Today we are going to do them both as we take a two-day canoe camping trip down the Delaware River.

    The Plan ...

Pretty simple. We'll arrive Saturday morning at the canoe outfitters to get our boats and spend the morning leisurely paddling about 10 miles down river to our campsites, which we should reach by early afternoon. We're going to set up camp and spend the rest of the afternoon hanging out until supper time -- you can play in the river, fish, or just take a nap if feeling a bit lazy. After dinner we'll amuse ourselves by the campfire until we fall asleep or get eaten by a bear, whichever comes first. Sunday morning we'll have breakfast, break down camp and paddle the remaining miles to our take out point where we will be picked up by the canoe outfitter and shuttled back to our cars.

    The Cost ...

Total cost is $82.00 per person. This covers your two-day canoe rental fee of $77.00, including bus transportation up/down the river, plus a $5.00 organization fee. There is no charge for the campsite.

We will meet at the Kittatiny Canoe registration window at 8:45 AM and sign up as a group for the trip. Please bring CASH to make things move quicker. DO NOT PAY YOUR ADMISSION ON YOUR OWN.

*Important: please print and fill out the liability waiver to quicken registration HERE.

    The Important Stuff ...

    • Paddling distance will be 20 miles. This is flat water and suitable for novices but you need to be in good enough physical shape to paddle for several hours straight. If you are a potato of the couch variety, this event is not for you.
    • The key to canoe camping is packing light as space in your boat is limited. You're responsible for outfitting yourself with your camping gear and meals. I've found a good baseline for what you'll need listed HERE. I'm more than happy to provide additional guidance so if you have any questions, ask!
    • Rental gear (tents, sleeping bags, etc.) is available at the Tents and Trails store in downtown NYC, Gear to Go Outfitters in Park Slope, Brooklyn, Eastern Mountain Sports and at several REI stores in the NY/NJ area.
    • Riverside campsites are available on a first come, first serve basis. This is primitive camping and most don't have bathrooms but I am aiming to land the group at several that have outhouse facilities, but that is not guaranteed.
    • Extreme bad weather cancels the meetup, chance of showers does not. Check your email before you leave home for updates.
    • I will send my mobile number to those that RSVP a day before the meetup. If you have any problems or questions text or call me. Be on time as we won't wait for latecomers.
    • RSVP only if you are definitely going. If you have commitment issues, please DO NOT RSVP. If you RSVP and have a history of no shows or last minute cancellations, you will be removed!
    • No guests are allowed on this trip, sorry.

    How to get there ...

Carpooling to the launch point is necessary. When you RSVP, please indicate if need a ride. Or if you plan to drive, where you are coming from and how many passengers you can take. Please be proactive and contact a driver directly rather than just saying where you need a ride from. Passengers should pick up the gas and tolls, and hooking the driver up with a caffeine infusion is a nice gesture.
