- Cheesy Desserts!
This will be a wonderfully decadent evening! We will be tasting desserts made with cheese. If you have a dessert that you would like to share, please bring it as well as about 20 copies of the recipe. Of course, it isn't necessary to bring a dessert. If you like, bring a snack or something to drink or just come and enjoy the evening.
- Visit and Tour Bohemian Creamery
We will meet Lisa Gottreich at Bohemian Creamery which lies just a mile outside downtown Sebastopol. The farm is on a hilltop overlooking the Laguna de Santa Rosa, the Mayacama mountains and her herd of Alpine dairy goats. Lisa gives a fabulous tour of her creamery with tastings and then we can play with her goats! It's truly a wonderful day. "It is here that the spring clover enriches our goats’ milk, the wild blue rye molds powder our natural rind cheeses and the salty marine layer infuses our ageing rooms. It is here where the inspiration for all our unique goat, sheep and cow cheeses is born. I will take you through the whole process of cheese making which includes being in every room of the creamery, tasting cheeses, etc." ...Lisa
- Nancy's Retirement Party
Come help us celebrate Nancy's incredible career on Saturday, March 30! Drop by anytime during store hours to wish her a great retirement and thank her for the decades of support she has given to our fermentation community! Snacks and drinks will be provided 11 AM - 4 PM. Feel free to bring a bottle to share or to send home with Nancy. Hope to see you! Please help spread the word!
- Chèvre, Valencay and The Club's Future
Nancy and Julie are making Fresh Chèvre and Valencay cheese. These are two very similar cheese makes, except for the ripening that takes place to develop the surface of the Valencay. Anyone else that would like to participate in making and bringing their versions to the meeting - we would all benefit from your experience. The most important part of the meeting is the planning for the future. As Nancy is retiring, and won't be able to continue with the club leadership, new partners to bring the club along are needed. This will best be served with dividing the club functions amongst a few people and hopefully everyone can then continue to enjoy a learning environment and good friends. Please bring along a food offering and or a drink offering for about 6 people. There is usually enough to share at that level. The club may have enough funds to purchase a couple pizzas for this meeting. As usual, a $5 fee will be collected at the door.
- Making a Pressed Cheese
David Martin and Kathy Laurie will be demonstrating making Gouda as an introduction to making pressed and aged cheeses. They will begin making it early, hoping that by 6:00 it will be about time to cut the curd. The demonstration is meant to be about washing the curd, cooking the curd and then pressing. This is a time for everyone thinking about making pressed cheeses to ask questions and participate in the process. David and Kathy will have some finished Gouda to taste. As always, feel free to bring snacks or beverages to share.
- Ricotta tasting with Bellwether Farms
Liam of Bellwether Farms will be sharing with us three different tastings of ricotta - their whole milk cow ricotta, their cow whey ricotta and their sheep whey ricotta. They taste delightful but each has their own standout qualities. It is fun and educational to taste them side by side. Nancy Vineyard will also be demonstrating how to make a tasty ricotta at home. As usual, please bring a snack and/or beverage to share.
- Annual Holiday Dinner Party for all Curd Herders
Mark your calendar! It's time to schedule our annual holiday party. Everyone come and bring something – your homemade cheese, a dish made with cheese, an entree, side dish or dessert. Libations are also welcome. Plan to share a small serving for 6-8 people and with everyone contributing, that should be plenty. This is always a fun evening and a great way to get to know other club members. We will have the plates and other service supplies, so just bring anything you need to serve your dish. The address of our host David Martin will be posted to the members that RSVP within 5 days of the event. Please don't wait to join in the fun!! IMPORTANT NOTICE Your organizer Nancy Vineyard has been working to reduce the fees we are charged by Meetup. In order to do this, the size of the membership will need to be reduced to active members from 2018. Please be sure to RSVP to this meeting if planning to continue with the group. This will keep you active in 2019. If you do not see your membership, you have been dropped. You can rejoin at anytime by adding Wheyward Bound as an active Meetup group to your profile. Attention new members: We realize that if you joined this summer, there hasn't been much activity but we are scheduling events and meetings beginning in November. Please come and meet with our group and learn about what great fun we have. Looking forward to a relaxing evening.
- Wine and Cheese Pairing
Jay has kindly agreed to lead us in an evening of tasting various cheeses and wines. Lots of tasting to each decide what wines we feel taste best with which cheeses. The more samples we have, the better. If you bring a half pound of cheese or a bottle of wine or both, your admission fee will be waived. Please respond with what you plan to bring so we don’t have too much duplication. If you can’t bring something, that’s fine. It should be a fun and interesting evening. If you prefer to email your response, please send it to Kathy at [masked]. Some possible suggested pairings: Blue with Petite Sarah or Port Viognier with Jarlsberg or Brie Mozzarella with Merlot Sauvignon Blanc with goat cheese Chardonnay with Brie Whatever else sounds good to you! What discoveries have you made ? What has worked for you ? Let’s pool the club knowledge of what we know has worked and maybe we will discover new and unexpected combinations !
- Planning meeting for 2018.
Welcome to any and all CURDHERDERS. This meeting is a chance to input ideas and wishes for club activities for the rest of 2018 and into 2019. We will have a couple of pizzas and salad at 6:30 pm to provide a little food for thought. We'll go over a few past meetings to gain ideas and then sort out our calendars to plug in potential meeting dates. Some meetings may be demonstrations, some road trips to cheesemakers in the county and of course, a movie night or two. Please come and bring your ideas! If you can't attend but would like to suggest a meeting wish, please post it to the message board or email Nancy at [masked] or Kathy at [masked]. Please join us if you can. The more input the more interesting our meetings will be! NANCY and KATHY
