SEPTEMBER 2016 IMPORTANT NOTE TO MEMBERS:
Hey there everyone -
I'm sorry I've been out of touch for so long; a combination of having gotten locked out of my Meetup account and some health issues have kept me away. And now I'm back just long enough to say: come over to Facebook!
We've hit a membership limit in my absence, apparently, which will cause the cost of maintaining this group to go up to $15/month. That's nuts! Since we already have a (free) website and a (free and as yet unused) Facebook group, I think it's time to move on over there. It's an easier platform for folks to post questions, have discussions, and schedule get-togethers at the park, too.
Due to the maintenance cost here, then, I'll unfortunately have to dissolve this Meetup group very soon. Hopefully you'll all migrate with us and stay in touch via other methods:
- join the Facebook group athttps://www.facebook.com/groups/whitbydogparkers/
- check out the website (which I really need to update!) at https://whitbydogparkers.wordpress.com/
- email me at email@example.com
I hope to see all of you online and meet more of you and your dogs in person in the near future, while we still have some gorgeous autumn weather left!
PLEASE NOTE : We're in need of a member who is the owner of a large breed dog and is willing to coordinate (just by greeting) our meetings on the big dog side of the fence! I'm not able to keep my little dog over there, so if anyone would like to volunteer we can gratefully start our Meetups on both sides again! ~Heather Do you have a good-natured dog who wants to make new friends? Is the idea of going to the local dog park alone kind of intimidating/less fun than going with people (and dogs!) you know? Let's meet up and expand our own social groups while our canine companions romp! (Our Meetups will take place at: Jeffrey Street Off Leash Dog Park, 405 Jeffrey Street, Whitby - just north of Nordeagle, just west of Iroquois Park Arena, and adjacent to the Lynde Shores Conservation Area. **WEATHER PERMITTING! Heavy rain or extreme heat/cold may result in the cancellation of a Meetup event.**)
A few notes:
~ according to Whitby bylaws your dog must have all vaccinations up to date before entering the park. A current dog license is also recommended (though I've never seen that being enforced).
~ this park has a fenced perimeter, so it's ideal for dogs who aren't yet experienced with parks or who aren't 100% guaranteed to come when called. (Like mine.)
~ there are a few picnic tables situated throughout both sides of the park, so if you're concerned about mobility issues, know that there are places to sit!
~ owners of small dogs will have the option of using the "small dog enclosure" or the adjoining all-sizes area. Because I am the owner of a small-breed dog who doesn't like the pace of the large-breed side, and because I am at present the only organizer for this Meetup group, I unfortunately cannot oversee the gatherings for big dogs and have suspended any formal meeting times for now. ** If there is anyone within our group whose dog prefers the big enclosure and would be willing to welcome fellow members on that side of the fence, please don't hesitate to contact me and I'll happily reinstate the large dog Meetups! **
~ there are a couple of bowls on the premises, as well as the occasional mucky community-utilized tennis ball, but I would recommend for your dog's health that you bring your own water dispenser/bowl and an easy-to-clean rubber ball that you wouldn't be heartbroken to lose in the nearby foliage!
~ the park is run on an entirely volunteer basis; for that reason we all need to bring our own poop&scoop bags, as the dispenser on site is usually empty. If you happen to bring extras, you can always donate one or two by leaving them in the dispenser for any fellow owners who forgot theirs at home.
~ THINGS YOU MAY WANT TO BRING TO THE PARK:
* a bowl/dispenser and a bottle of water
* a toy, like a rubber ball, if your dog is playful
* insect repellent in case of mosquitoes (running a freshly cut lemon over your dog's coat is said to act as a non-toxic mosquito repellent, too!)
* the aforementioned poop&scoop bags
~ if you're a member and have an idea for an additional dog-centric activity (neighbourhood walks, nature hikes, exploring other off-leash parks in the area, etc.), please feel free to suggest it here at any time!
~ all ages, sexes, races, religions, ability levels, and dog breeds are welcome to join!
