White Noise is a meetup group for creative writers based in Lawrence, Kansas. Meetings are typically held in the basement of the Lawrence Public Library on alternate Thursdays.
Most meetings are critique groups, where two authors submit stories in advance and the rest of the group provides feedback at the meetup. Depending on group interest and suggestions, the group will also do writing challenges and other workshops to learn and improve as writers.
Submissions for critique should be fiction or creative nonfiction pieces that contain no more than 3,000 words, but a minimum of 1,000 words is suggested. (Fractions of larger pieces or combinations of smaller pieces are acceptable.) Unpolished first drafts or rushed last-minute submissions are strongly discouraged. The more substantial the submission, the more useful feedback authors will receive.
We schedule which writers will present pieces at least a few weeks in advance so the writers have time to prepare something. The group will also have a list of backup writers who already have pieces prepared in case the scheduled writer doesn't submit a piece or can't attend the meetup. Scheduled writers must upload their stories to the Files section by 11:59 p.m on the Thursday before the meetup. If a writer fails to submit a story in time, the first backup writer (or writers) can submit his or her story before 11:59pm on Friday. If that writer fails to submit a story in time, the next backup writer has until 11:59pm on Saturday, and so on.
The schedule will be determined by rotation of writers who have attended three or more meetups. The writer who has waited for the longest time to be critiqued (or has never been critiqued) will be at the top of the list, followed by the writer who has waited the second-longest amount of time, and so on. Writers can ask to be moved down the list but not up unless a higher-up writer agrees to move down.
The list of backup writers will be on a volunteer basis (first-come, first-served), but scheduled writers who miss their deadline will have the option to be placed at the top of the backup list. Backup writers who miss their deadline will be moved to the bottom of the backup list. Any conflicts about the schedule will be resolved by Roshambo with the older writer kicking first.
In order to cover the costs of using Meetup.com, each writer (scheduled or backup) will pay a membership fee the first time he or she is critiqued in 2016. Writers can either pay $10 cash in person to Jason or Steven or $12 electronically using the "Chip In" feature on the left side of the Meetup.com page. (The additional $2 covers the electronic payment processing fees.) Because we want to continue bringing in new members, there will still be no fee for other writers attending meetups.
