"What’s Going On?" - with Paul Gerzon

This is a gathering to look at and to make sense of the times we’re living in. What’s happening on the planet, in our culture and society, and in ourselves and in our relationships can be confusing and mystifying at times! What’s going on? What explains cultural shifts and personal struggles? How can understanding these times help us live in a more satisfying and meaningful way? We will look at the big picture, as well as our own experience of and role in the changes taking place on our planet and in our bodies and souls.

As John Lennon imagined in his famous and timely song, some things are going out of season. His song “Imagine” creates an image of life on earth without religions, countries, an unfair monetary system, or possessions. I feel he had a vision of the future, when he wrote this song, tuning in to the spirit of the times.

A growing number of us have found that understanding the 25,800 year cycle is of great use in understanding these times. It is based on the astronomical fact of the precession of the equinoxes, plus Michio Kushi’s interpretation, plus other macrobiotic people’s development of the principle, especially those living in the macrobiotic village called Ionia. This Season Principle suggests that we are coming to the end of 12,900 years of “night.” Dawn of the 12,900-year long “day” half of the cycle is near. These times are the equivalent of a few minutes before daybreak in a 24-hour day, or spring equinox in a 12-month year.

Some people on earth are waking up, due to the times. Most are still asleep… but even they are dreaming of waking up. The nature of life “awake” and the nature of life “asleep” are very different. Both are backed by the universe; neither way is wrong or right. But they are different, and when it’s time to be up and about, it doesn’t feel good to keep lying in bed, asleep, just because others are!

If you are reading this, you may be one of the people whose wiring (from Nature, Existence, God, the Universe, whatever you call it) is to wake up earlier than most. How does one live “awake”? How does such a person live in a society that is still asleep, or dreaming about waking up?

The talk and discussion will be organic, but will most likely include:

• Sharing and reflecting on our own experiences to help understand the big picture

• The nature of identity in the last season, during the current transitional time, and in
the next season

• Talking about “seasonal schizophrenia” and how to deal with it

• The role of food in each “season”

Paul Gerzon began macrobiotics in 1967 at the age of 12, influenced by his older brother Robert and by reading George Oshawa and Michio Kushi. He changed his diet from “meat and sugar” to “grains and vegetables” at that time and has thought in terms of holism and yin/yang monistic dualism ever since.

He helped found Ionia, the macrobiotic village in Alaska, and lived with those pioneers[masked].

He values his time learning from, and wishes to acknowledge, Alan Watts, est, Landmark Education, Process-Oriented Psychology, Kripalu, David Deida, Byron Katie, Marshall Rosenberg (founder of “Non-Violent Communication”), Guided Self-Healing, the Human Awareness Institute (HAI), New Culture, Tom Monte, and Eckhart Tolle. He is certified in Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy and is the father of six children.
