Video and Kitchen Demonstration for Preparing Grains

Are grains an important part of your diet?

If so, you should prepare them properly before cooking and baking with them.

Grains that have been improperly prepared contain phytic acid that interferes with the absorption of calcium, magnesium, copper, iron and especially zinc. The most popular grains, especially wheat, also contain gluten. When the hard-to-digest gluten proteins are properly prepared, they are more digestible and readily available for absorption.

Heather Metz has offered to host our next Parent Nutrition Support Group in her kitchen. After watching a video and having a discussion about preparing and digesting grains, Heather will demonstrate techniques that she uses in feeding her family.

Heather has been facilitating the Parent Nutrition Support Group since its inception in February 2013. She is trained in nutrition, is raising three girls, and is a member of Real Food for Kids, a parent activist group working to improve school lunches in the Fairfax school system. Heather will be coordinating the small group discussions during the second half of our program.

The meeting will begin by watching two brief videos that were recently aired on the Public Broadcasting System as part of Healing Quest.

Registrants will be given Heather’s street address next Wednesday. Please direct your questions or comments to Heather at [masked] or Jack Moore at [masked].

Hi Heather! I'm going to try to make it to the meetup tonight, but I won't know for sure if I can make it until about 5pm. In any case, can you tell me your house number--I'm not sure I saw it on the directions here. Thank you! --Cathy Tulloch
