• 10 Ways to Detox Your Body and Gain Energy

    Puree Artisan Juice Bar

After a long winter, you may be feeling a little sluggish and tired. We’ve been less active, sunlight deficient, stressed, eating less fresh produce, and indulging in holiday treats all winter - all of which contribute to toxin accumulation! Some of this accumulation in winter is natural, but in our modern toxic world, it's mostly just, toxic! Spring is the natural time of year to detoxify, and there are simple daily habits that you can implement to get those poisons out, gain energy and prevent disease. In this evening workshop, Robin Shirley will first explain how to avoid some of the most prevalent chemicals in our daily lives. Then you’ll understand how our body naturally detoxifies when it does accumulate these poisons from our environment and food. She’ll also give you ten simple ways you can help your body detoxify on a daily basis. Come right at 6:30pm to sample some healthy treats from Puree Juice Bar, and grab a good seat! Seminar begins at 7pm sharp.

  • Amish Farming At Its Best: An Inside Look at Real Organic Food

In the past 100 years, the American food supply has transitioned almost completely to industrial farming. Whereas all farming was once sustainable and organic, now barely more than 5% of our food is raised to affirm healthy living, for people, animals and the environment. On Saturday, October 13, from 3:00 to 5:00 Farmer John Esh will lead a discusion about how he started as a conventional farmer, but then changed to organic farming. He will also discuss differences between raw and pasteurized milk, and A1 vs.A2 milk. John will also lead a similar discussion in Fredericksburg from 11:30 to 1:15, In keeping with our Meetup's preferences for minimally processed, whole food nutrition, he will talk about how he prepares dairy foods such as his butter, cheese, yogurt, and ice cream, as well as his fermented foods, bread and specialty foods. As with August 2017, John looks forward to meeting many of his Northern Virginia customers. I have been a customer since 2010, and so appreciate his food and farming that I wanted to bring him back for another Meetup. And to keep everyone happy, John will have many free samples for people to snack on at the beginning, middle and end of the meeting! For Reston, please register on the Meetup site. For either location, you can also email Jack Moore at [masked].

  • Steps to Improve Digestion with Ayurveda Techniques

Do suffer from poor digestion? Constipation? Diarrhea? Irritable Bowel Syndrome? Bloating? Gas? Sluggishness after eating? Acid reflux? Overeating? Are you an emotional eater due to stress? Do you have food intolerances such as to gluten, dairy or soy? In addition to these problems, there are several other signs that your digestion is not working properly, including bad breath, body odor, chipped fingernails, anemia, and undigested food in stools. Over 70% of your immune system is fueled by your gut. No matter how careful we are in the selection of our food, if we cannot properly digest it, we cannot fully assimilate and utilize the nutrients contained in the food. When your gut functions better, the rest of your body is healthier! Since the underlying cause of MOST digestive issues is STRESS, coupled with a poor diet and rushing through meals, Ileana Gonzalez will walk us through PRACTICAL SIMPLE, AYURVEDIC STEPS to help you SLOW DOWN while eating, LISTEN TO YOUR BODY and eat FRESH, ORGANIC FOOD that is attractive, wholesome, aromatic and tasty! Ileana will give us lifestyle tips such as reducing snacking between meals to ensure meals are fully digested before eating again. She recommends drinking mineral/distilled water or herbal teas with ginger, lemon, peppermint, fennel & coriander to strengthen our digestion. More broadly, she will show us how to apply the ancient principles of Ayurveda to attain better digestion, improve our health, and prevent disease. She will give us practical tools to cope with the STRESS of our hectic lives. Ileana Gonzalez received her ayurvedic training in 2009 at a leading Indian training center, hospital and pharmacy. She returned to India in 2012 to study with Dr. Vasant Lad and the staff of his esteemed Ayurvedic Institute, located in New Mexico. Ileana is based in Reston, where she is the resident at Beloved Yoga’s A Sanctuary for All. With a 6,000 square foot facility, Beloved offers 75 yoga classes weekly, as well as numerous events, workshops, and special performances. Price (1870 – 1948), was a Cleveland dentist who researched the connection between nutrition and health through many years of studying traditional diets worldwide. In 1939, Dr. Price compiled his results into Nutrition and Physical Degeneration, used for many years by Harvard College as a textbook in cultural anthropology. In 1999, Sally Fallon Morrell created the Weston A. Price Foundation (WAPF) as an educational nonprofit organization to share Dr. Price’s work in the U.S. and abroad. Now with 10,000 members, a quarterly journal, Wise Traditions, an annual 4-day November conference, and an information-rich website, the Foundation is dedicated to restoring nutrient-dense foods to the American diet.
