Cobbs Creek Weekly Weeds Walk

All are invited to a free Tuesday morning series of informal hikes and botanical knowledge exchange along the trails of Cobbs Creek, with an especial emphasis on learning about invasive wild edibles. We are continuing with our third hike where Baltimore Ave crosses the creek (the terminus of the 34 trolley line). This time we will follow the path north along the creek until it reaches the environmental center, crossing a footbridge to a loop through a floodplain meadow, then back again on the creekside trail. There should be some specimens familiar to the corridor and some surprise plants and fungi we have not yet encountered! We will meet at the trailhead NW of the intersection of 61st and Baltimore Ave. The walk shall commence at 10:10am; we should be done with the loop by 1:00pm. This location is quite accessible via SEPTA and bicycle (there is a bike lane running the length of Baltimore Ave); free street parking is also available. I look forward to joining with you to learn, share knowledge, and enjoy a taste of the edible abundance of Wild West Philly!

I am delighted to announce we have a bona fide scientist joining us tomorrow, the director of the 2 1/2 acre wetlands restoration project across the footbridge from the environmental center, George Ambrose. He oversees all of the native plantings and maintenance of this area and has a comprehensive knowledge of the history and direction of the watershed and the local park systems. Bring your questions! And yes there are mulberry trees with ripe berries along this stretch of Cobbs creek. See you all tomorrow!

I don't know whether mulberries are considered "wild" for the purpose of this group . . . .but they're only ripe for a short time and are delicious, and many people in Philly seem not to know that they're edible. There's a tree on the east end of the bridge at the Wissahickon transit center (at Ridge & Kelly Drive) & 1 at Falls Bridge & 3 (2 purple, 1 white) at the first parking lot as one heads south on Kelly Drive. All along the bike path. They're at their peak and will probably be ok for another couple weeks. Don't want anyone to miss out.

The length of the walk is an estimate based on a loop that is an optional extension; one can always cut back at the environmental center or earlier. This would pertain both to 4 year olds and those who have afternoon obligations! The reason I included the lengthy extension is because it involves a restored meadow that features blossoming milkweed and poor man's pepper, among other edibles. The entirety of the walk is relatively flat and easy, with an abundance of wild shiso along the beginning segment. We could also curtail it if most attendees want it shortened. I don't want anyone to feel excluded or intimidated by the time or length!
