Voluntourism is defined as "the act or practice of doing volunteer work as needed in the community where one is vacationing." It has been an increasingly popular way to travel. This month we are going to have a panel discussion on voluntourism -- looking at the when it helps, when it doesn't, and what it is like for a traveler on a voluntourism trip.
We will also hear from three tour operators/guides that specialize in voluntourism. They are: Andrew Rivinus with Habitat for Humanity - Global Village (https://www.habitat.org/volunteer/travel-and-build/global-village), who leads builds around the world; David Krier of Volunteer Voyages (https://volunteer-voyages.com/), who's volunteers enrich lives through humanitarian service adventures, and Brad Nahill of SEE Turtles (https://www.seeturtles.org/), who protects endangered sea turtles through unique conservation and volunteer trips. Find out how their trips are improving the areas they go to and changing the world for the better.
Talk Travels meetups are free, however, all attendees are asked to donate $5 to cover meetup costs and buy the volunteer speakers a drink.
Also, please plan to buy food and/or drink to support the venue. Our venues rotate throughout the greater Portland area. This month we will be at Max's Fanno Creek Pub in Tigard. We have a private room for our group, so I do need an accurate headcount. Please, only sign up if you plan to attend and put the event on your calendar. If something comes up and you can no longer attend, please go to the meetup website and switch change your RSVP to a no. Thanks, it really does help when people honor the RSVP system.
