What we're about

We are a monthly meeting book club. The goal, is to have a nice laid back time, tea, or wine, or some other hot drink, and to enjoy a good discussion about the book, or just a good discussion in general. We have a relaxed approach, where we discuss the parts of our reading that we want to. Usually there are a few question, but they are to get people thinking, the discussion can be as broad or focused as the group like. This is about being uninhibited and free in our conversation, having a good time surrounding literature. We don't limit discussion to the book. This group can become as social as we like... But most importantly this group is about having fun. Weather you have done the reading or not, bring yourself to book club!

A little about Wildflower Farm, Wildflower Farm, operates in many ways. Mostly it is a small functional farm and home to several people, though it is also at times home to short term visitors to the area as well. It is a sanctuary of sorts, a place where you can be who you are, open and free. It is safe here to be who you are, surrounded by trees and the adoring fan base of the animals that make this place their home.

Just so we are all on the same page, we are open to anyone looking to come. It is a primarily female oriented and focused group. However, some men may fit into it great... And some may not. Other things to note, we don't cater to no shows. So, if you sign up to come to the book club and then you are a no show, you may find yourself removed from the group unless you get in touch ahead of time to let us know not to plan on your attendance. Weather you have read the book or not, reading is as much about life experience as it is reading the words on the page, you may still have some valid insight on the book.

Some thoughts on books and reading: My favorite thing about books.... Is the way they transport you, they take you on a journey, an adventure, to worlds that don't exist, to worlds that do exist. They expand your universe every time you sit down with a cup of tea by the fire, snuggled under a quilt, and you read. Your perspective, expands, your understanding of yourself and other people alters. You grow as a human being for the special experience you have between the covers of a book.

Books, fill your dreams, they are one of the most magical devices humanity has ever invented. The written word has been around for thousands of years it transcends cullture and language barriers, as every language has it's own letters and grammar rules and words.

Books, carry truths that aren't simple or so easy to put one's finger on. They express deep things that go beyond space and time even when the genre is not science fiction.

But my favorite kind of books, are fiction. Usually with a strong female character and her internal issues driving the story. Women's fiction. Stories about women, and the magical way they think and operate. The history of the female sex. The rolls women have played through time and around the world. Books like Memoirs of a Geisha, The Mists of Avalon, Casting Off, The Birth House.... And so very many more.

So, I invite women with similar interests, those who yearn for a good adventure, a deeper understanding, a sisterhood, to come out the first monday of every month to my home at Wildflower Farm. Come with me on these adventures that happen between the covers, within the pages. Enjoy some farm charm and a hot drink, and let's talk about what these stories mean. Because there is no right answer and no two people will see it the same way. But being able to view it from more than just your own perspective, will once again, add something to your adventure. Come away with me... To Nova Scotia, to explore what it was like when men and the medical profession tried to shut down the midwives. Experience the magic of Avalon, or the deep winter of Alaska with an elderly couple that always longed for a child.... There are so many wonderful adventures it would be a pity to have to go on them all alone.

Wildflower Farm Book Club, Ahab's Wife by Naslund

Wildflower Farm

Bring a copy of the book if you like or tablet containing one. Food, a drink, always welcome. Though usually theres something to snack here, and we do wine some times or a cup of tea, or perhaps a beer etc.... We talk about the book, get to know each other. We keep some minutes for our meetings, someone writes down some of our thoughts on the book, we track the funniest comments made at the meeting, and we talk to each other about life. Ahab's Wife, is the story of Ahab's wife. And when I say Ahab, I DO mean the cannibal that sailed around the ocean looking for his white whale. Ahab's Wife, written by Naslund, is about a woman that had something like 3 husbands. She was from Kentucky, ended up as a child living at a lighthouse, worshipping the giant tower producing the light. She then did what women didn't do. She had some pretty interesting and even horrific adventures, both maritally and just by doing what women don't do in this age. Ahab, was her second husband... She shared many things with him, unlike her first marriage this one is better.... Come away to Nantucket, to learn about this interesting character and some interesting things about life itself.
