Hiking - Brice Creek

We will be meeting in the Best Buy parking lot just off of I-5, along Gateway, at 8:30AM. I plan on setting up carpools and leaving at 9:00AM. Brice Creek is a scenic creek with small falls that is east of Cottage Grove, near Dorena. The drive is about 45 to 50 miles, so about 100 miles total. Please be willing to chip in $10 to the drivers for their contribution to getting everyone to and from the trailhead safely. The hike along Brice Creek is 5.5 miles one way, from West Trailhead to Champion Creek, and the east trailhead of Trestle Falls. I'm planning on going from West Trailhead up to Trestle Falls, and finishing at Champion Creek, for a 6.7 mile hike. We will need at least two cars for the shuttle.

Trail Info: 6.7 miles, with 1,420 feet of elevation to Trestle Falls. The trail is rather flat for most of the hike, until the path to the falls.

Where: Brice Creek - 22 miles east from Cottage Grove on NFR 22.

When: 8:30AM at Best Buy on Gateway in Springfield.

Directions: Head south on I-5 towards Cottage Grove. Take the 174 Exit for Cottage Grove. Turn left at the light. Follow this road out of town and pass Dorena Lake. Stay on National Forest Road 22 as it passes into the Umpqua National Forest. The parking lot will be on the right, and marked as Brice Creek - West Trailhead. The trailhead is across the road, on the left of the creek and bridge.

Details: I'm hoping to reach the trailhead around 10:00AM. We will take a lunch along the trail, so bring a packed lunch in your backpack. Also, there are many great swimming holes along the creek, so I suggest a swimsuit of some type and a towel. After lunch we will continue along the trail 1.6 miles, and reach Trestle Falls, which we will be walking behind. The trail is narrow in some spots with some elevation gain up to the falls, but is well worth the effort.

Contact: Matthew Howell - (541)[masked]

Forest Service: Cottage Grove Ranger District - (541)[masked]

Requirements: At least a liter of water and a lunch. I highly recommend comfortable quick drying clothing and durable hiking shoes or boots. There is no parking fee or forest pass needed for this hike.

I had a great time, and enjoyed seeing everyone. It was relaxing and stress free to be able to hike along, take pictures, strike up conversations with different people, and hike the trail at our own pace. The water felt good on the legs. Was fun watching those that jumped off the cliff. For those that like seeing trails in various seasons, be sure to check out Brice Creek in the fall. A lot of gold on the leaves and the waterfalls look amazing.

Does anyone know if bicycles are allowed on the trail? My daughter wants to come and bring her son who is almost 11yrs old. He wants to bring his bike if it is ok.

The trail would be a bit technical with some very narrow sections with rock walls on one side and a steep drop to the river to the other. I would ask that there not be any bike riders with us while we are hiking, sorry.

Austin is coming home tonight for the first time in a month. It is his only day off before I have to take him back to work. I'm sure he won't want to spend it hiking. So I'm canceling. Looking forward to hiking with everyone soon.

I am bringing a friend to this hike. Our first time to meet the group at gateway mall parking lot. Is it easy to see the group there?

    July 27, 2013

    • Matthew H.

We will be meeting at Best buy, not the Gateway Mall. Yes, it is easy to find. Turn into the parking lot near the intersection that has a Starbucks and a Panda Express on the corners. We will be in the parking lot at Best Buy, you should see us.

I did this hike few weeks ago. A great place to hike and swim in the [addictive]cold water. Enjoy the hike!

The weather looks great for the weekend. It will feel great to relax and cool off in the creek during the hike. A lot of us going, so it will great to see everyone and enjoy the day together. Please anticipate some time spent at various swimming holes during the hike. We can always take our lunch near a good spot. That way those that wish to swim and cool off can, and those that don't can relax and enjoy their lunch and talk with others. I look forward to seeing everyone this weekend.

Sounds like an delightful hike. I would love to go, but I don't think I can walk that far. Are there any hikes planned for wimps?

    July 22, 2013

    • Matthew H.

I have been looking for all types of hikes to add. My aunt and uncle have shown interest in joining me and want to also start out with easier hikes. I will try to add some nature hikes, as well as let people know that some hikes have options for shorter routes. As for Brice Creek, there are a few options of hiking the flatter areas of the trails. If you park at Cedar Creek Trailhead, you can explore a little ways in either direction, or Lund Park, where there is also a footbridge and a nice creek bed to sit and enjoy the day at.

This should be a great day to also explore the creek for swimming holes, so bring a suit and towel if you are interested.

I just heard about this place from a friend and can't wait to go..I plan to bring one person..Can I bring our small dog on a leash?

    July 3, 2013

    • Matthew H.

Dogs on a leash are fine. As long as no one planning on going has allergies, or fears of them. Also the dog must be well behaved and the owner must clean up after them. Thanks for asking in advance.
