MAY Wilmington Writers Group meeting - Dennis Tafoya and The Human Voice

MAY Wilmington Writers Group - Dennis Tafoya
Monday, May 12, 2014 - 7 pm

The May Wilmington Writers Group meeting topic: The Human Voice

Tension is what keeps the reader turning pages, and tension arises from fully realized characters who struggle for recognizable goals. We'll discuss how the character that drives effective fiction can be created and revealed through motivated action, realistic interaction with other characters and the environment, and dialogue that sometimes reveals more than the speakers intend.

Our meeting place is now Red Robin in north Wilmington, north of the Concord Mall on Rt 202. The address is 6100 Brandywine Parkway, Wilmington, DE between the Target and the water fountain lake. The meeting officially starts at 7:00 pm but many of us come early (around 6:30 pm) to eat and socialize a bit - but you can order your meal at any time during the meeting. They are seating us in an area which should be good for creating a closeness and offer us some seclusion.

Just a reminder that you can order a scrumptious meal at Red Robin off their extensive menu. We don't get charged for the great room, but Red Robin does have the expectation that attendees will order a meal. It is a fair expectation and the meals are reasonably priced. IF you have special dietary needs, the manager has agreed to create some vegetarian friendly meals with some advance notice. If you would like this, please call and make arrangements at least a day in advance.

Mark your calendar for every second Monday of the month. Feel free to tell others and bring a friend or two.

This is a membership group. After you attend and try us out, we ask that if you find the group of value and want to continue, you help with the costs of running the group. The costs of the group include the fee we pay for meetup, the web site hosting and buying meals for guest speakers, handouts, fliers, etc. YOUR FIRST MEETING IS FREE AND A TRIAL TO SEE IF YOU FIND IT A FIT!

This is a sister group of the Main Line Writers Group, held the third Wednesday of the month in King of Prussia. you can check it out and see what people think of it!

We are all looking forward to seeing you!

As usual, any questions, please contact me, Gary Zenker, at[masked] or [masked]. We are all looking forward to seeing you there.

Dennis was very interesting and had some excellent points on the craft of writing, while still maintaining one's own style and approach.

It was also great to see Greg from Between Books!

“ Excellent meeting. Dennis Tafoya provided great information and insights about writing character-driven narratives. I enjoyed the readings that highlighted various ways authors bring other story elements to light through the eyes, actions, and interactions of characters. Good stuff!

Dennis was friendly, knowledgable, and down-to-earth. I am so happy I went to hear him. I am going to read all his books, as well as the books he read from that he likes. Thanks to the organizers for inviting Dennis to our meeting!
The other wonderful thing is that one writer had a question about what he should do in a particular situation. People gave their opinions and suggestions. It's a group of people interested in helping each other. How great is that?!

Dennis offered great insights into the craft of writing and how voice impacts the piece. He read great examples that made me want to read all of the original source books!

Dennis Tafoya was an excellent speaker. He shared the ways that a character-driven piece can act and feel and sound. I found it most interesting to hear that "everything should be filtered through the characters." He also shared quite a bit of knowledge about publishing. Thanks, Dennis!

Great program last night. As a new writer, I learned a lot from Dennis and from other members of the meetup group. This was my second meetup and the atmosphere has been supportive and inspirational. Thanks!

Looking forward to this session. Writers learning about the craft together is one of the main reasons I'm in a writer's group.
