Auckland's best little beer festival is back for 2019. The Society of Beer Advocates presents City of Ales on the 16th of February 2019, from the beautiful outlook of the Ponsonby Cruising Club at Westhaven Marina. This year we are bringing some of the best regional breweries to Auckland. Over 20 beers from around New Zealand will be available alongside tasty food offerings, in our popular intimate atmosphere with a view from below the Auckland harbour bridge. You can look forward to unique and hard-to-find beers from the likes of McLeods, Brewaucracy, Craftwork, Kainui, and more. And we'll also be serving a special funky, barrel-aged festival beer made at Sweatshop Brew Kitchen, in collaboration with Outlier Cartel and SOBA members. Come along for a weekend getaway to drink wine from the Gimblett Gravels in the beautiful Hawke's Bay. There's many vineyards with Cellar Doors: Stonecroft, Te Awa, Trinity Hill, Unison, Beach House, Craggy Range, Crossroads, Elephant Hill, Esk Valley, Mission Estate, Pask, Sacred Hill and Vidal Estate. And quite a number (at the Gravels or in the region) do lunch or platters: Sileni Estate, Abbey Cellars, Oak Estate Wines, Ash Ridge Wines, Trinity Hill, Te Awa Restaurant, Unison Vineyard Cafe and Hawke’s Bay Golf Club Café https://gimblettgravels.com/wineries/ I've found a Boutique Lodge that sleeps 8 people (4 rooms with 2 people in each) that is 6kms away from the Gimblett Gravels wine region. Its called Meadowood House and the entrance is across the grounds from Crossroads Winery. My suggestion is that we book the house for 2 nights - being Friday the 1st and Saturday the 2nd March and then head back to Auckland on Sunday the 3rd. You can either drive down which would take 5.5 hours each way, or fly down which is an hour each way. Flight costs are from $62 pp each way with Jet Star or from $94 pp each way with Air NZ. There's about 4/5 flights each day with each airline (depending on whether you take Friday off or not), and of course the sooner you book the better price you'll pay. The house has 4 glamping sites so if more than 8 people want to go we could book those too. They also have bike rental so we could tour the vineyards using those. Possible Weekend Costs: Petrol - approx $200 per car Jet Star flights - from $62 pp each way or Air NZ - from $94 pp each way Accom - $200 - $250 pp for the weekend - if there are 2 people in each room Bike Rental - from $45 per bike per day Wine Tastings - approx $20 per vineyard Vineyard Lunch - approx $40-80 pp Things to Book straight away: Flights to Napier if planning to fly Whatsapp Group - I'd like to set up a Whatsapp group for this trip as we'll want to discuss the accom arrangements, which vineyards to go to, pre-bookings, any deposit and pre-payments, etc. So once you've booked onto this trip, please download the app onto your phone and I'll be asking for your phone number as part of the booking process. If you have problems being part of a chat-group then do let me know by private message. Accommodation Meadowood House This has 4 rooms - 2 are ensuite - one x King, one x Queen and the other 2 share a bathroom - one x Queen, one x Twin It also has 2 Medium & 2 Large glamping tents - have a look at the website for more details https://meadowoodhouse.co.nz/boutique-accommodation/ If people want to book their own accommodation then that's also fine, but I thought this way would be easy and fun
