Note: This is a 3-day weekend ride, starting Friday, July 16 and returning Sunday, July 18.
Enjoy an extended weekend outing on this self-supported bicycle tour in Door County, Wisconsin (http://www.doorcounty.com/), riding along the shores of Lake Michigan! The ride is based out of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, where we will start Friday morning and return to Sunday afternoon. The routes for both Friday and Sunday are 60 miles on quiet country roads with rest stops planned at the quaint towns where you can refresh yourself with the unique treats that Door County has to offer. There will be time for sightseeing and "doing the tourist thing" for those who wish to do so, however the routes are designed to avoid the highly congested tourist areas.
Friday's ride goes to the Northern tip of Door County, where we will take a ferry boat (http://www.wisferry.com/) to Washington Island (http://www.washingtonisland.com/). We will spend both Friday night and Saturday night on Washington Island.
On Saturday, we will have a very casual tour around the perimeter of Washington Island, stopping at many places along the way and including another ferry boat ride (http://www.wisferry.com/rock.html) to Rock Island State Park (http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/ORG/LAND/parks/specific/rockisland/), which we will tour on foot. We'll have group dinners both Friday and Saturday. You may also join us for a concert at the island's Performing Arts Center (http://www.truebloodpac.com/index.html) Saturday evening on Washington Island.
On Sunday, we will return to Sturgeon Bay via a different route than our outbound route. We can expect to arrive back in Sturgeon Bay by early afternoon on Sunday.
Door County (http://www.doorcounty.com/) and Washington Island (http://www.washingtonisland.com/) offer an interesting assortment of things to do and see, and have numerous shopping and dining opportunities.
Please note that this is a self-supported ride and that no luggage transport is provided. Each rider is responsible for transporting their own supplies for the weekend. Pack light and use a large saddle bag or panniers. Enjoy the ride at a more moderate pace and experience a great sense of independence!
