Once in a Blue Moon (Night Ride)

  • This location is shown only to members

Only once in a Blue Moon does an opportunity like this come along, so start your Labor Day weekend a day early and join us for a fun filled day and a bike ride under a Blue Moon.

Brewery Tour

Our day is based out of New Glarus, where we'll begin with a Hard Hat Tour of the New Glarus Brewery. You'll need to sign-up in advance for the tour ($21) and space is limited to 15 people, so you'll want to sign-up right away, since the tours are open to the public.

The tour includes both the Riverside Brewery (the original location) and the Hilltop Brewery, where we will be led on a complete "behind the scenes" tour. The tour culminates with a sampling of 6 to 8 New Glarus brews complimented by 4 to 5 cheeses.

New Glarus Walking Tour and Dinner

We'll have some time to tour New Glarus before having dinner. Dinner will be at the Glarner Stube in downtown New Glarus.

Once in a Blue Moon Ride

Our ride will be an out-and-back route of about 20 miles on the Sugar River State Trail and Badger State Trail. Both trails have a crushed limestone surface and are suitable for hybrid bikes or road bikes with wider tires. We will ride through the 1,200-foot-long Stewart Tunnel, where you'll see all of the details of the tunnel, since your eyes will already be adjusted to the dark.

12:45 PM - Meet at Riverside Brewery location (the original location) of New Glarus Brewing Company. They request we arrive 15 minutes early for our tour that begins at 1:00 PM. Make sure you have closed toe shoes for this walking tour of the brewery.

1:00 PM - Our tour of brewery begins.

3:00 PM - Our tour of the brewery finishes. (It's about a 2 hour tour.) The rest of the afternoon is available for touring the shops of New Glarus.

5:00 PM - Dinner at Glarner Stube

6:30 PM - Gather in the parking lot of the Sugar River State Trail Headquarters for the ride. Setup our bikes and make sure our lights are working properly.

7:00 PM - Ride!

7:18 PM - Moonrise

7:34 PM - Sunset

8:03 PM - End Civil Twilight

9:30 PM - End of Ride

For safety reasons, the ride is limited to those at least 18 years of age. Also, the ride will be canceled if it is raining. Everyone should be prepared for the cooler temperatures of the evening.

A front, white headlight visible for at least 500 feet and a rear, red taillight visible for a distance up to 600 feet are mandatory to participate in this ride.

Please note in your RSVP which of the events (brewery tour, dinner, night ride) you plan to participate in.

Trail Pass Information

Note: A Wisconsin state trail pass is required to ride on these trails. There are many places in New Glarus where you may purchase a trail pass if needed.

4/15/12: As of today, the New Glarus Brewery has only 6 spots still available for the Hard Hat Tour of the brewery. If you want to go on this tour, I suggest you sign up right away. Since this tour is open to the public, it will probably be sold out in the next few days.
