Kettle Moraine Road Ride

  • May 12, 2012 · 10:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

We're going for a road ride around the Southern Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest. The ride offers challenging hills and great scenery. We'll ride on quiet country roads, many of which are lined with fragrant pine trees of the state forest.

The ride is entirely on paved roads, beginning and ending in the town of LaGrange, just east of Whitewater. Our ride will include a stop at a well-known Artesian Well and we'll take a lunch break at Frosty's Frozen Custard in Whitewater. After lunch, the route splits, so that you may choose a route of either 25 or 36 miles. Maps and cue sheets will be provided to allow groups to form so everyone will be able to ride at their own pace. We will regroup at the highlighted points along the route and at the route split.

Plan to arrive by 10:00 AM. We will push-off promptly at 10:30 AM.

Our ride will begin at the parking lot on the NW corner of Highway 12 and County H in LaGrange.  From Whitewater, go 7 miles east on Highway 12. The map on the link above should be correct. (LaGrange General Store / Backyard Bikes is on the NE corner of this intersection. Please do NOT park in their parking lot.) If the parking lot on the NW corner of the intersection is full, you may need to park along County H, just north of Highway 12.

The no shows missed a great ride. Weather was perfect with no sun to get over heated. The group had great fellowship during lunch.

The ride is a GO! I'll send out an email later tonight with all the last-minute reminders, etc... If anyone else wants to join, feel free to come even though the RSVPs are closed. You'll just miss out on the email, that's all... The weather looks great! Let's hope it stays that way! P.S.: Have no concerns about the road construction, we will ride around it the best we can.

Here is a link to a map of the MILWAUKEE STREET (RT. 12) construction. Again, the road is currently closed, asphalt gone, pipes and construction equipment everywhere. Main Street (marked in pink) is your most direct alternative.

If you'll be approaching Whitewater from the Whitewater Spring artesian well via Clover Valley Road, it becomes S. Wisconsin Street as you near the city. Construction on THAT street is imminent and as you pass the cemetery on your left construction barriers will greet you coming and going. It'll be okay for Saturday, you can go on through, but within a few days S. Wisconsin Street will also be closed for construction.

Don't think I can make this ride, but I also wanted to tip you off that, in addition to Frosty's being permanently closed, Highway 12 (Milwaukee Street) is completely torn up on the East Side of the city where the empty Frosty's sits. If you'll be coming into Whitewater from LaGrange via Bluff Road, you will keep straight ahead and take Main Street (bumpy, poor asphalt), which parallels Milwaukee St. / Rt. 12 just one block over to the north.

I like this ride, but cant make it this year. Cuz of surgery I am not up to par to ride that long yet. Maybe in a few weeks I can join a ride thats not to far from me.

Thanks for the note about Frosty's. Too bad, as they had a nice picnic area in back. There are several other restaurants right in the area, so we will just go one of them instead.

CowaLUNGa comes up through here on day 2. Our last rest stop is across the street from the General Store in LaGrange, and we stay overnight in the dorms at UW-Whitewater. There are some GREAT roads for riding in the area!!!!
