Wisconsin Bicycling Meetup Message Board › Proposed Fourth of July Weekend Event

Proposed Fourth of July Weekend Event

Group Organizer
Wauconda, IL
We are currently planning our 2011 calendar and we wanted to get feedback regarding a particular event that has been proposed for over the Fourth of July weekend. Linda () has suggested a trip to Leland, Michigan, for what she describes as one of the most beautiful places in the country.

Bicycle rides would be planned for both Saturday, July 2 and Sunday, July 3. Linda describes these as beautiful 25 to 50 mile rides along Lake Michigan, Sleeping Bear Dunes, Wine Country and small artsy towns in Leelanau County. On Sunday, July 4, there will be many events in town or we could plan for another day of bicycle riding.

Linda suggests taking the SS Badger Car Ferry () that runs between Manitowoc, WI and Ludington, MI. The ferry crossing takes 4 hours and a round-trip costs $109 per person + $118 per vehicle (2010 fares…2011 fares not yet posted). From Ludington, it is about a 2-hour drive to Leland. Of course, you could drive around Lake Michigan if you wish, but that would be a long drive.

As for lodging, Linda suggests the Leland Lodge Resort () in Leland. Rates are $145 per night for a private room up to $295 per night for a multi-room unit to sleep up to 6 people. Other, less expensive, lodging options in further away towns (), but travel time and gas costs probably negate cost savings. For those of you interested in camping options, Linda suggests Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park (), which is about 20 miles from Leland Lodge Resort or Traverse City State Park () which is about 17 miles from Leland Lodge Resort.

Lodging reservations are needed by the end of March and the ferry reservations are needed months in advance as well. So, please check with your friends, carpool mates and roommates (we realize the costs are high, so we expect most people would want to team-up and share expenses) and let us know if you are interested in this event AND could commit to participate by making your lodging reservations by the end of March. For now, we just want to see if there is sufficient interest in this event. Please respond to this message on the Wisconsin Bicycling Meetup Message Board () by February 28. If there is enough interest, then we’ll ask those who responded positively to go ahead and make their reservations.

Wow! Sounds like a great holiday weekend of riding. I am 50% interested/available. I would need to make some arrangements as I am sure others will too. I'll watch the postings and work on clearing my calendar, etc. Thanks for the great suggestion.

I'm potentially interested. Since I live in Chicago, I would not take the ferry and would hopefully carpool with others in the Chicago area or people from Wisconsin taking the long way around.

I won't be able to make this one. Sounds nice, though.

Hi Ron!! Happy almost spring is here day!

The trip sounds interesting, but this is not a cost efficient adventure for me.
I am sure I will see you on the trail my friend.

Have a wonderful day!!! Keep on Bikin :) :)

I'm afraid I'm already booked for this weekend.
I'm camping closer to home, this would be too expensive for me.

Enjoy the trip everyone.
