Wilderness Survival & Emergency Shelters at the Earth Lodge!

Please note that this workshop is being cross-posted to other sites as well, so be sure to rsvp asap before we close enrollment. The cost is $45 for one person, $40 for the second friend/family member who registers, and $35 per additional friend/family member, so make any necessary adjustments to your cost before being redirected to PayPal. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to our host Bibiana Ancheta for her earth lodge fund which is being built in part for Native Youth cultural activities.
It All Starts with the Critical Order of Survival This great workshops will start promptly at 10:00 a.m. with introductions and a detailed overview of the
Critical Order of Survival which will evolve into a chance for you to determine your own list of emergency supplies you would never hike without, depending on your current wilderness skill level. Next, we will actually demonstrate important aspects of emergency survival, including water purification, traditional fire by friction, and wild edibles, among other choices. In fact, we will even start a fire using the "bow-drill" method, and learn to transfer coals between the shelters we will be building today. Please note that we have upcoming monthly workshops on fire, as well as wild edibles and water purification among other topics, while this workshop is designed to focus on the most important skill in the emergency timeline: shelter.
From Survival Shelters to the Luxurious Earth Lodge This workshop progresses into a wonderful sharing of similar but distinct kinds of natural building. From preparing yourself for emergencies by knowing what to bring based on your skill level, to scrambling to build a natural shelter in a survival situation, to honing advanced building skills to create a natural home, this workshop will open your eyes to the importance and elegance of our most basic of needs. By late morning we will be treated to a wonderful presentation on natural building and traditional homes by Bibiana Ancheta inside the frame of her Earth Lodge pit house. Her power-point presentation includes photos of other traditional homes she's visited around western North America.
The Earth Lodge - A Pit House Next we will discuss the design of the Earth Lodge, and among other things, you will learn how to create air-drafting systems so that smoke actually goes out the smoke hole instead of filling your shelter up, among other tricks-of-the-trade, so to speak. During lunchtime (bring your own) you will have the choice of relaxing, assisting instructors prepare for afternoon shelter projects, or helping Bibiana install natural roofing trusses in the Earth Lodge.
Survival Shelters After lunch, you will critical details about how to build shelters that will keep you alive even if you brought nothing from a store. We'll start to build a "debris hut" as well as a "lean-to" arrangement that works to gather heat from your fire using rocks for reflection and retention. During the last half of class, you will have flexibility in choosing which shelter to learn fully, including construction of the Earth Lodge pit house, completion of the lean-to fire reflector, or a debris hut that actually works like a sleeping bag!
Great Day in the Earth Lodge Join us for a great day together, and please contact us for carpooling information. Prepare as you normally would for a hike, including lunch, water bottle, 10 essentials, etc. However, please be aware that sparks from the campfire can melt your synthetic clothing, so wool might be a good option. For more information, check out our article on survival shelters which was just published in Seattle Backpackers Magazine.
