  • [Advanced Developer] Unlocking WP with GraphQL and NextJS

This month, we have Seagyn Davis, a software engineer at Leadhome, and Daine Mawer, a {{clever guy}} at 10up giving us a talk on GraphQL and NextJS. GraphQL is a powerful query language that allows us to improve the way that we request data from backend services. With the world requiring more data and the requirement for frontends to be as quick as possible, GraphQL allows us to request the exact data we want in one request and only get that data - that's great for reducing the size of requests and ultimately improving the speed of data transfer. We will start off with Seagyn giving us an introduction into what GraphQL is and what the exact benefits are. He will then cover how to get it installed on WordPress and how to play around with it. Next.js is a powerful React-based framework which brings no fuss setup and scaffolding to your React projects. From Server Side Rendering to CSS-In-JS, Webpack Configurations to Continuous Deployment, Next.JS is fast becoming the weapon of choice for serious React engineers. Taking over from Seagyns showcase of GraphQL in WP, we'll setup a Next.js project in under 5m, deploy it to Netlify with Github and consume data from the GraphQL API, asynchronously, leveraging Netlify's incredible caching and more. Our goal at the end of the talk will be to have a page load speed of under 2s, full indexable by Google and 100% dynamic.
