WordChicks Melbourne - the Custom Content Edition

Hey Girls!

I hope you're loving the change of season and getting to grips with having longer days!!  I just love this time of year!  Lots of new stuff in the works always feels great.

For November we're going to look at new stuff too... or at least extending your WordPress install, or theme development with some custom content...  Basically looking at Custom Post Types and Custom Meta Data (Custom Fields).  It will be a bit more technical than some of the meetups we've done in the past and I hope you'll look forward to rising to the challenge!! There's some awesome stuff available in this area.

Here's how we'll break it down...

6.00pm, Arrive, meet and greet, chat.

6.20pm,  News and announcements.

6.30pm, Talk: We're going to talk this month about Custom Content... i.e. Custom Post Types, Custom Meta Data and the Custom Templates associated with them.  This is going to be a fairly broad overview with a bit of technical content thrown in, but I'm interested in having a look at the following.  (If you have any relevant questions/comment, have at it in the comments).

1. What constitutes Custom Content?

2. When to use Custom Content or more importantly, when NOT to.

3. How to use Custom Content. Including, but not limited to plugins to use to create Custom Post Types/Taxonomies and Custom Meta Data.

7.30pm - Head behind the factory to Hare and Grace for drinks/dinner for those interested in carrying on the discussion.

If you're interested in doing a talk on any of the above, I'd love to hear from you.  Would be great to have some other contributors involved!

Hi all, I'm thinking of doing a wordpress day on my own project tomorrow (sat) if anyone's interested in joining?? I was thinking at 1000 pound bend in town, or if no one else is coming along I'll just get cosy at a cafe in St Kilda. Let me know if you're keen to hang out and get your word on :)

I've cancelled next month's WordChicks in favour of us all joining with the wider group at the Christmas Bash... Wednesday December 11th... hope to see you there

Sorry I think I joined the wrong group. I am not a gal. I just realized this mistake. It will be utterly embarrassing if I turn up at the meetup.

Anthony, you're welcome to attend. The audience is predominantly female. But we don't exclude guys from attending if they wish.

Sounds good... Am I correct in assuming "WordChicks" is a "girls only" event..? I do see one guy in the the RSVP list though... :)

Hi Nic. It is a mostly female event. But we don't exclude anyone. So you're welcome to attend.

I often cross-dress and polish my nails in real life (no joke.)
Can my female alter-ego be part of your events?

Hi Mauricio, we don't exclude anyone. So you're welcome to attend. But yes, it is a predominantly female audience.

Hi guys, I'm new to wordpress. Would this meetup be too advanced for that? Just wanted to know before I hit "YES". :)

    October 10, 2013

    • Dee T.

Hi Rebecca. I don't think it will be too advanced. At least we're not currently planning the meeting to include heaps of code. It will be more of an overview I think.

Would love to come but I'll be at the races - it's Oaks Day! (If weather's bad or betting not going so well ;-( I may come along but won't know till the day). I'm sure it'll be a good session.

Excuse my ignorance but was there a WordCamp in April or is there another one coming up soon? if so any details?

    October 7, 2013

    • Dee T.

Hi Kathy, yes, there was a WordCamp in April, and at this stage there isn't another Melbourne one in the works, but I believe there's a Sydney team developing for one in the first half of next year... we'll let you know as soon as there are any concrete details...
