Hello WordPress Users, Hope you all well :-) If you have missed our previous events, don't despair. You can find the slides of what we covered so far here http://www.meetup.com/WordPress-User-Group-London/files/ This is the last meetup of 2015 so make sure you come along. It will also be the last event organised by Wholegrain Digital and WP Engine, our dear fellow WordPress user Peter might take things forward in the new year (pressure is on ;-) This time around, in the first half of the evening, we will mimic a speed dating kind of exercise in order to facilitate networking, I call it "Speed DatePress". We will basically spend a few minutes talking about ourselves individually in a one to one scenario, sharing information such as who we are, what we do and what we want to get out of WordPress. We have never tried it, but it has been suggested by some of the users that it might be interesting to find out who we are all hanging out with. No actual dating will be required ;-)Do bring those business cards you made some time ago that are gathering dust on a remote shelf of your bookcase. After a short break, I will be very eager to talk about one the most fundamental aspects of running a WordPress site: plugins! We'll cover what they are, how to choose one, how to use them and I'll share a short list of secret plugins you most probably never heard of, but you might need in the future. Please don't forget to bring your own laptop along, WiFi will be available and, of course, there will also be plenty of time for you to ask questions. Agenda: 6:30 pm – Sign-in, pizza & network 7:00pm – News & Latest 7:15 pm – Speed DatePress 8:00 pm – Break 8:15 pm – Plugins, tribute to a beautiful thing we all take for granted The event will be held at the Hub Westminster, 1st floor New Zealand House, 80 Haymarket, Westminster, London, SW1Y 4TE, which is conveniently located between Piccadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square. One of us will welcome you on the ground floor where you'll be asked to sign in and collect your pass. Please wear your pass at all times since we are part of a government building. Then make your way to the 1st floor via the lift (not the stairs, those lead to Narnia) and then follow the signs to the Strategy lab. If you have any questions, here are two forums that can help you out. One About Meetups Discussion http://www.meetup.com/WordPress-User-Group-London/messages/boards/forum/9788972 and one for WordPress Support & Help http://www.meetup.com/WordPress-User-Group-London/messages/boards/forum/19803502 Last but not least, we are building some resources for you to consume, help yourself here under the "Table of Contents" http://www.meetup.com/WordPress-User-Group-London/about/ Look forward to seeing you soon. Ciao, Eugene PS: If you sign up and then you can't make it to the event, please make sure you change your RSVP to let others on the waiting list attend. We will keep a record of whose of you that will prevent others from taking part and we reserve the right to deny you access to future events, sorry.

Hello WordPress Users, Hope you all had a nice summer. If you have missed our first few events, don't despair. You can find the slides of what we covered so far here http://www.meetup.com/WordPress-User-Group-London/files/ Since we've been away for so long we'll have a light restart based on networking and a walk through a theme modification talk. More often than not we don't have the time to build a theme from scratch and/or have the budget to ask someone to do it for us. Buying an off the shelf theme and customise it to branding requirements have become a common practice. Some of you might be lured by a very engaging demo theme but find it difficult to adapt your content around the newly purchased item. Some other might want to change more than just the colours and fonts. Well I'll try my best to show you what are the best ways to go about and deliver a well balanced, cost efficient, original website. Please don't forget to bring your own laptop along, WiFi will be available. Of course there will also be plenty of time for you to ask questions and network with all other WordPress users. Agenda: 6:30pm – Sign-in, pizza & network 7:00pm – News & Latest 7:30pm – 15 minute break 7:45pm – Walk through a theme modification 8:45pm – Wrap up and conclusion The event will be held at the Hub Westminster, 1st floor New Zealand House, 80 Haymarket, Westminster, London, SW1Y 4TE, which is conveniently located between Piccadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square. Hello WordPress Users :-) Hope you all well. Welcome to the last event before the summer break, make sure you come over. If you have missed our first few events, don't despair. You can find the slides of what we covered so far here http://www.meetup.com/WordPress-User-Group-London/files/ This time around we'll have two exciting talks ! Justin Maxwell will tell us about "getting tibbed". A quick background on the history of micropayments, and the consequences of there being no digital equivalent of pocket-change scale transactions, including a tacit acceptance that content alone cannot generate revenue directly. An introduction to bitcoin, and it's usefulness as a means of transferring value. tibdit's solution to 'the micropayments problem', a walkthrough of our WordPress plugin, and our solution for WordPress.com users. Please don't forget to bring your own laptop along, WiFi available. In the second half we'll have "Nudging Good User Experiences Along Using WordPress" by Tricia Okin. Everyone keeps throwing around the term “UX” (user experience) like a new buzz word that can fix anything. HINT: You can only fix what you know about at any given time. A component of crafting a good user experience is tuning in to what people need from you and delivering it well. Thankfully, WordPress is already a great platform to do so, but we can go a bit further in helping our users along their happy paths. We also need to realize that people don’t just experience digital platforms only on desktop or mobile anymore. It’s most likely a combination of 2 - 4 different platforms: mobile, desktop, tablet & possibly kiosk. We’ll take a look at the multichannel experience and how people really use technology. What We’ll Cover: - A basic overview of user experience in every day life both digital and analogue. - Look at key principles to consider when designing and developing a holistic experience for people - Review a user's journey and key pain points that can arise - Look at the multi-screen experience that most people have throughout the day. - Plug-ins that can help smoothen it out for people visiting your site. - We can take a look at few member's sites for critique if we have time as well. About Tricia Okin: I love learning about people, cultures, languages and why people do the things they do. I’m constantly searching for the “Why?” in a scenario. With all that, my primary love is designing (for) online communities, to connect people to others and to share in storytelling and their histories. In my spare time, I travel to experience new places and people. My work includes clients who extend across multiple industry verticals, including education, nonprofit organizations, entertainment, tech, and food & lifestyle. I'm currently a lead instructor for generalassemb.ly's User Experience Design Immersive course in both the London and New York city campuses. Of course there will also be plenty of time for you to ask questions and network with all other WordPress users.
