To follow up with our discussion last week, I came across and interesting plug-in called WP-Touch.

It supposedly automatically detects Mobile Phone Device, and supports mainly all major used Devices like Android, iPhones, Palm Pre, Samsung Touch and many others.

I do not know how good it works but might be worth checking out.
