Please provide feedback topics you would like to see on the meeting agenda

What would you like to get out of this meetup? What would you like to learn about WordPress and how to use it? What sort of problems have you had with WordPress that you need help with? What topics would you like to present on? One of the members who attended the first meeting submitted the following list as a conversation starter. What can you add to the mix? If there are topics you would be comfortable presenting on, please indicate those, too!

- Best practices for transitioning from a development server to the live server (there was some discussion about that last night) -- how to minimize site downtime, restoring an old site if there are problems, etc.

- Best practices for upgrading WP and plugins (when not to just click the "update now" link)

- Starter theme strategies (choosing a parent theme or framework)

- Best practices for developing child themes

- Using template tags, short codes and filters

- Reasons to use WP instead of Drupal, Joomla and other CMS's

- Best practices for working with web clients, managing their expectations, and supporting them after the site has launched

- Best organic SEO practices for WP sites (theming issues, SEO plugins, working with SEO vendors, managing client expectations)

- Best practices for backing up both the WP database and the site files (we touched on that briefly last night)

- Hosting -- shared hosting vs. VPN vs. dedicated server, what "gotchas" to look out for, configuration files & directives (php.ini, .htaccess)

- WP Multisite (when it's appropriate to use Multisite, unique hosting/performance requirements, installation & maintenance tips)

- Plugin selection (criteria for evaluating and choosing plugins)

- Discussion on when to consider using custom post types

- Discussion about image galleries (lightbox display vs. attachment display, use of gallery plugins)

That list seems to cover most of the bases, especially when you consider that people are likely to bring questions about particular issues or topics to the meetup. If I had to add anything, I would like to become more familiar with WordPress naming conventions and best practices for design and development.

On side note, we didn't have a huge turnout, but the group we had seemed fairly evenly split between users, designers and developers and it would be useful to know if this is consistent within the mailing list, or just a fluke.

Topics mentioned at the March 2013 Meetup:

  • Custom post types and categories (emphasis on SEO)
  • Preventing your WP site getting hacked
  • Responsive design (again)
  • Preventing comment spam
